I like my 'stich, but I think I'm getting to old to jump off a motorcycle at 65 mph.  I've got a one piece with the cheaper foam/plastic back protector.  Small windscreens on the bikes allow enough breeze that I like a warmer suit than most of you, so the 'stich has a sewn-in Thinsulate liner.  I wear it as is down to about 50, colder temps require wearing something under it.  As the others mentioned, the one piece suit is good for commuting.  It's expensive, but with almost no care at all, it will last at least 150K miles. My winter riding suit is a one piece North 49 snowmobile suit.  It is much warmer and much cheaper than the 'stich but it has no armor or other riding protection.  It's good down to about freezing without a jacket under it.  The North 49 costs about $130 but only lasts about 30K miles.  Since I'm not riding as many miles as before, I'll probably look for something other than a 'stich for my summer suit.  I'm down to about 15K miles per year, so I don't need a summer suit that will last more than 10 years.  I need another winter suit and will get another North 49 before it gets cold. My experience is they match up license plates to accounts pretty well, so if the alarm goes off I still get billed. The only times I've gotten the love letter from the toll authority was when I've forgotten to register my vehicle (one motorcycle, one car). I've found the transponder works well enough on the dash of the car (and bike) in the center and upside down (compared to how it's supposed to be mounted on the windshield) as well as, obviously, on the windshield at an angle. It only sporadically reads when I forgot and left it in the center console of my car, my jacket on the bike, or off center on the dash. I've never tried directly vertical. On my EX500 I just mounted it to the plastic "dash", which worked perfectly. --Matthew On Thu, Sep 2, 2010 at 10:38, Aki Damme <01dyna@XXXXXX> wrote: > Here's one that I think might be pretty good. Cycle World made me a killer deal on the Gold Wing, and they also ship stuff daily.  They are prominent on Ebay, and Mark is the person you want to speak with about getting a bike.  He is the owner's son, and he treated me great.  The parts guys are very helpful, and I would imagine you could get it shipped for very little.  I'm originally from that area, and my brother used to work there.  Three of us in my family are regular customers.  Highly recommended. I would go with Fredericksburg Motosports. I've been buying KTM parts from them because they are *cheaper* than even places in Georgia and other "backwaters". They are a Yam dealer also. An even closer one would be Cyclesport Alexandria. Good crew and helpful staff. Didn't give me much beef when I asked them to match out of town pricing on some parts. But haven't bought a bike there. Clinton Cycles (MD rt5 near air force base) has a good service shop. You shouldn't have to lean on them too hard to get a decent price. But their costs will be higher than folks down south or farther west like: Valley Cycle center (Winchester) - good place for a big multi-line dealer Blalock Cycle (Warrenton) - tiny place but seriously customer service oriented. Absolute bottom dollar is probably Romney Cycle in Romney WV. Again, a mid-sized place but the DC-area favorite for getting the lowest price. Would Blalock, Valley, or Fredericksburg match Romney's price? they very well might. _______________________________________________ dc-cycles mailing list dc-cycles@XXXXXX http://dc-cycles.org/mailman/cgi-bin/listinfo/dc-cycles _ _ _ _ .-.-.=\-. .-.-.=\-. .-.-.=\-. .-.-.=\-. An accurate CBA requires more info. Do you plan to do all of your own maintenance? If you don't need a local resource then you can spread further out to look for the bike. From what I've observed our area has an amortized cost of doing business that is higher than most other areas and our bikes show a few hundred dollars more in initial cost as a result. Think about it, rent & real estate around the DC area costs more, and they have to pay for that somehow. In '06 I bought my ZX14 from MFI in Hood^^ I mean Woodbridge. I scoured the internet for deals and found them cheaper, however, when I added up what it would've cost me to get home in cost of travel there were none close enough to justify traveling outside the Dale City Metro area. MFI ended up being the 2nd cheapest deal, however at the time of purchase I was not prepared for full maintenance so I anticipated 1-2 services there, and they give you a 10% off parts discount. <- Don't scoff, even though bike parts are HUGELY marked up just like cages, when I ruined a couple fairing pieces they ended up procuring 3 of them cheaper than I could find after DAYS of scouring the cyber-earth. MFI is not a Yamaha dealer… Just relaying what I used to reach my decision. I also bought 1198s from Coleman. Nobody in the area was significantly cheaper. Yes, the guy out in Loudon was about $150 cheaper but realistically not worth me schlepping out there and back for service and I'm now setup to do a good deal of my own maintenance. Not all of it, but a good deal of it. Out the door, I didn't do significantly worse than others looking for the same bike. A couple hundred here or there, but again I was not going to fly a thousand miles & ride home saving $800 on cost but spending 3-400 of that plus my time to get it home. If you're going to do your own maintenance, and don't really need a local shop resource, buy where the deal is. If you're going to have it serviced at least a couple of times, it may help somewhat to have a local relationship. HTH Dave On Sep 2, 2010, at 12:25 PM, Glenn Dysart wrote: > I'd fly to Texas. Lucky you - according to the link, the new bike will be a limited production model, meaning it will be like buying an Aprilia or Ducati. So it depends on how much you want one. FWIW, I paid close to 8 bills on the invoice of my 1198s in March '09 for miscellaneous dealer profit. Not the tag or taxes money, the other fees like freight, admin, and other administratrivia that adds up to the various dealer entities making money. However, on my ZX14 3 years earlier my fees were much less; the bike cost half as much, and pretty much everyone who sold Kawasakis had ZX14's to spare. IMO, 800 bucks on a bike that should be under $13k is a bit steep without seeing an actual invoice… I'd have thought between 5-7 hundred just off the top but again you are aiming for a limited production & import bike. I would and have put it to negotiating on equal terms by making absolutely sure you are dealing with comparison out the door prices, all taxes, tags, fees and costs accounted for, and ready for you to ride it away. Even though the fees on my Duc invoice look pricey - they don't just look pricey, they ARE pricey, the out the door price was consistent with all the duc dealers around I could find, including one up in PA that I know someone at. YMMV of course, but so long as you're comparing OTD prices don't sweat the fees so much. You can't begrudge a dealer their profit so long as you're not being taken advantage of. I think the $800 is just a "garbage fee, " i.e., "dealer's profit." I just looked at my invoice for the Beemer. The only add-on for me was a "processing fee" of $199 for the DC tags, in addition to actual passed-thru cost of what DC DMV charged them. They told me the processing fee would have been $99 in-state (in Va.). That's the cost for their processor to work their magic at DMV. Thanks Dave, you're right with all this stuff. Considering my bikes never see the inside of a dealership except for warranty work (not much experience with that even, but all bad to the point where I don't think the warranty's are worth much - with Kawasaki at least). So yes I'll be doing as much of my own service as possible. The biggest periodic maintenance job is valve adjustment, at 24,000 miles (compare that to the 1200GS at 6000 miles). Still, I'd like to support a local dealer, but with $800 setup fees vs ZERO setup fees and a bigger discount at an out of town dealer, it makes it hard. It's something like $1500 cheaper to travel 3 hours away. So... the deal is done. Romney Cycles gets it. Thanks all for the help and recommendations... now the long wait till May next year!
