To: DC-Cycles list Subject: Re: [dc-cycles] Man that videotaped police faces 16 years in jail The wiretap charge is two things: 1) general intimidation of the public by the government to help them keep their actions off the record when they are guilty of malfeasance (i.e. they don't want what they do to be known, and people taping them doing it gets in the way of the coverups), and 2) the government is looking for leverage in the bargaining when Graber sues them for assault, reckless endangerment, etc. over a police officer driving dangerously, threatening with a firearm, etc. while out of uniform and prior to identifying himself as a police officer. The charge is bullshit as an application of the law...but it's a bargaining chip and deterrent to others taping the police similarly. Or that's the intent IMO. The case may be too weak to be a bargaining chip, and it may just enrage the public enough to get cops wired at all times. -- Mike B.
