I was merging onto I-495 (exit 45 in McLean,VA, from Rt 267 northbound/westbound to inner loop). I was about halfway into my lane, with no shoulder and a jersey wall on the right. The truck driver came from behind me in the 2nd lane from the right, decided he wanted my lane, and just moved over. I was able to brake and move over behind the truck before I got to the jersey barrier. Cars behind the truck scattered when they saw what he was doing, so I had space behind him. I called Allied to report the driver -- got voice mail during business hours, and left a detailed message. They never called back. I called the DOT to report the driver, and they said without the DOT number from the side of the cab they couldn't do anything ("There are so many Allied Van Lines"). I had only the Allied Van Lines trailer number. Oh well. So get the DOT number of that truck. it's a jungle out there, Chris P.S. Shout-out to the vast majority of truck drivers, who are professional and a pleasure to share the road with. _______________________________________________ dc-cycles mailing list dc-cycles@XXXXXX http://dc-cycles.org/mailman/cgi-bin/listinfo/dc-cycles _ _ _ _ .-.-.=\-. .-.-.=\-. .-.-.=\-. .-.-.=\-. I'm glad nothing happened and everything was okay for you. That DOT number is on either side of the truck (Uusally next to a NAFTA Sticker of something), so unless you chased him down, you wouldn't see it.  Truckers and Bikers have a similar stereotype/label...it only takes the actions of a few to label a group of many. My mom was a long haul driver for many years, and she has some stories to tell about the stupidity of people out there. If only bikers were as responsible then we'd probably be greater in numbers and enjoy more respect from the rest of the motoring world. I've been run off the road by minivans and BMW's but never a truck driver. This seems like an uncommon and unexpected incident and I'm happy you were able to daftly maneuver your way out of that jam, Chris! Somewhat unrelated: Heads up for those of you who've never driven a heavy vehicle. If you've passed them going uphill then you might be in their way in the downhill. Some state and local laws prevent them from using the left lane. So, it's sometimes a polite thing to move over to the left lane (counter intuitive) so that they can keep up their speed going into the next hill. -James On Thu, Jul 15, 2010 at 11:07 AM, Nick Thompson wrote: > I've had similar instance, Chris. What was particularly annoying about being run off the road is that I was in the left lane at the time because I'd moved over to let some trucks pass without them having to change lanes... Was on I-95 north of Baltimore, heading south, in the middle lane. No hills were involved. About 6 trucks were coming up from behind, so I moved into the left lane to let them go past without their having to go around me (they were significantly over the speed limit, I was only slightly over). The first truck went by, and then the one following him decided to pass him, and came over into the left lane, where I was. I moved off onto the shoulder to avoid the collision...and then it got "interesting". I was younger and perhaps stupider, but when it was over, he was probably regretting running me off the road and repeating the mantra, "Never piss off anyone crazier than you are...especially if they can get up to 90 mph faster than you can." -- Mike B. _______________________________________________ dc-cycles mailing list dc-cycles@XXXXXX http://dc-cycles.org/mailman/cgi-bin/listinfo/dc-cycles _ _ _ _ .-.-.=\-. .-.-.=\-. .-.-.=\-. .-.-.=\-.
