I've got 18k miles on the original set (404s?) and they will probably see 20k before I need to replace them. Having said that, I've got Avons (a Roadrunner in the rear and a Roadrider on the front) on my R100S and they seem to ride well also. Never ridden the Avons in the rain though, so I cant speak to their wet grip. But the Dunlops performed well in an 8 hour rain ride on the way back from VMD a couple of years ago. Maybe I'd find their limits if I rode hard, but my hotshoe days are long behind me. Unless I see something demonstrably better for the same price, I'm planning to buy Dunlops again when these finally wear out. :o) Jeff Silver Spring 04 XL1200 Roadster 77 R100S Naked 79 XS650 Street Tracker > ---------------------------------------------------------------------- > > Message: 1 > Date: Thu, 8 Jul 2010 19:26:52 -0400 > From: "Aki Damme"<01dyna@XXXXXX> > Subject: Re: [dc-cycles] Meztler vs dunlop > To: "'DC-Cycles'" > Message-ID:<037201cb1ef5$0c6e7f20$254b7d60$@com> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" > > FWIW, I *hate* Dunlops...the pair I had on my Harley was hard and slick as > hell when wet. Kenda vs Metzeler The 250 works well with the Kenda in the rear, it provides good traction when dry, acceptable when wet and lasts significantly longer on a cost/mile basis than the Metzeler ME880.  The Metzeler does provide better traction when it's wet.  On the VStrom, I replaced the rear Kenda with a Metzeler.  The heavier VStrom didn't corner as well with the Kenda, I could feel the rear walking out in high speed corners, so I went back to the more comfortable Metzelers.  Kenda vs Avon. The current front tire on the VStrom is also a Kenda, it may be that the front Kenda  contributed to the uncomfortable cornering I felt.  The front Kenda is nearly worn out, I've bought an Avon to replace it. The Kenda wore out on the right side more than the left, which is not normal, and the bike currently has a bad headshake with hands off the bars.  I'll need another 10K miles on the Avon to decide whether the Kenda is at fault or the bike.  Kenda vs Dunlop. The previous front tire on the VStrom was a Dunlop.  I had no complaints with it.  I bought it off-the-shelf at MFI, both traction and wear were ok.   The Dunlop did not exhibit the head shake that the Kenda currently shows. Avon I bought Avon's for the front of both bikes because they're relatively low priced and provide acceptable traction.  There might be better out there, but front tires get replaced so infrequently that I don't have a good feel for them. Leon. ---- Original Message ---- From: Paul Benish To: DC-Cycles Subject: [dc-cycles] Meztler vs dunlop So i went through my the archives for the list and I couldn't find anything on this.  Basically I need to get tires for my 2001 Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 classic and I have been looking at Metzler but then I found a set of Dunlop 404Fs that are stupid cheap but I'm wondering if they're worth it?  I saw something on here about a shop in sterling that's pretty much right behind where I live so i was going to check them out before I went and bought them but right now i'm debating whether I can justify the more expensive tires since I don't race (it's a cruiser duh) and I really don't take extremely long trips.  I guess one thing that would sway me one way or another is life of the tire since i don't ride anywhere near as many miles per year as I used to. Any comments would be appreciated -Paul ------------------------------------ "Do you know what the chain of command is here?
