[DY] I'm wondering how you control such a device in heavy traffic. In the .5 seconds it takes most humans to recognize & respond to stimulii, we've dealth with a BDC. They will just be realing "motorcycle". OTOH, it could be useful in the middle of nowhere or less severe traffic. ----- On an aside, how many of you have taken delivery of a BMW by waiting for the ship to cross the Atlantic? [DY] I had a hard enough time just having a running bmw in Europe. 2 1200 RTs broke down on me in 3 days leaving us stranded in Brescia. We finished the trip via Fiat Punto. The 1st was an abs module, the 2nd an electronic issue. I was curious how long it usually takes for the stuff to clear the Edison, NJ processing facility before it's on it's way to a dealer. I've been chomping at the bit for my new bike (enough so to track the shipping container on-line) and feel I'm at the limit of my waiting (I was hoping for this weekend, but that's a fat chance given it's on a truck in NJ right now). Anybody else have an experience they can speak to? [DY] with a tow truck? yes. Thanks to BMW's roadside assistance, my wife & I got to watch the Isuzu tow truck drive away with our 2nd busted bmw while we scrambled to figure out how to say "Would you send a taxi?" in Italian. That was the easy part, the hard part was figuring out where to call to get a taxi. (Just for reference, it's a 2009 BMW R1200 GSA - after this week so far, I'm looking forward to the heated grips which my Triumph doesn't have) [DY] Bah! You'll stay plenty warm after the break down... trust me, they are not light. After you push it a few times, you'll be warm... OK... ok... I might be a little bitter. ;-) The heated grips on the bmw work great, even when the bike won't run! Seriously, I used them in Ireland both times and they made a big diff. The GS felt odd to me in the way that it handled. The feedback I got from the front was vague. It didn't do anything scary or wrong, just... well - different. Anyway, good luck with the new ride! At this year's ride, completed about 1 month ago we upped our fundraising amount by nearly 40% from the year before-to $283,000 so far- and that could go up more as additional late contributions get added to our total. We generally meet on the 2nd Tuesday of each month in Columbia, and we have ongoing work that needs to be done in preparation for our Ride which takes place in September of 2009. Generally, you do not need to be a motorcyclist to participate in this event as a volunteer. We are looking for a new parking coordinator and that person **does** need to be a motorcyclist. If I had to estimate the time involved, I'd say, 4 hours per month for meetings-including travel to Columbia. Outside activities take additional time. If you are interested in participating in this organization, please get in touch with me directly. Many thanks, Henry Winokur Route Coordinator-for the past 12 years.(or something like that.) I had taken a week off this spring to wander around, and pretty much fell in love with the freedom from destinations and obligations, so I felt like it was the right call. My plan was: Start from Corolla, NC on Sunday, end up in Tellico Plains on Friday, via Ozzie's, to return Georgette's shoes. For whatever reason, packing for this sort of thing is incredibly stressful. I try to plan for every contingency, try to suss out what could possibly happen and what I'd need to deal with it. I keep forgetting that the most important thing I can bring with me is my state of mind - if I have that, the rest I can deal with. I put everything together on Friday after work. it took a couple hours, but I finally got on the road - Destination: Corolla, NC. It's about 5.5 hours in the car, so I was looking at a 1am arrival. no worries, I can sleep in the next day. I made good time, sticking to the slab only because it was dark, and the roads between the beach and home are pretty uninspiring. I gassed up at Richmond, and got on 64... I don't know what happened to me at the gas stop, but 20 minutes down the road, my eyes were drooping, and my head was nodding. After nearly dozing off, I decided that a rest stop would be a wise choice. I napped and rested for a couple hours, and got back at it. Coming into Hampton Roads, I was just droning, when I got passed by a sportbike, running WFO, at a delta V of an order of magnitude. I about shit my pants... but even that jolt of adrenaline wasn't enough to keep me awake, and I made 3 more stops before arriving at the beach at around 6am. http://www.blackroses.com/~skip/fallride08/1.html through http://www.blackroses.com/~skip/fallride08/26.html Sunday I got out on the road about 11, destination: Wilson, NC, to return shoes. I was peckish, so I stopped at the Outer Banks brew Pub (http://www.obbrewing.com/) - a highly recommended establishment. I lucked out - they can't serve beer until noon on Sunday, and I arrived at 11:55. I had their carolina bbq, and it was outstanding - an event that I was fortunate enough to repeat several times on this trip. Highway 64, out of Manteo, is a speed trap it turns out, and I received my first ever motorcycling performance award, clocking in at 83 in a 70. As the trooper was issuing the citation, I thought about some of the other passes I'd made, having screamed past a line of 10 cars at, oh, a buck-ten. I took it like a man, and motored on, albeit at a slightly more sedate pace. Since my destination was set, but my arrival was unannounced, I took the scenic route. I pulled off at a public boat ramp to rest my arse, have a smoke, and just enjoy the day. it was a good decision. http://www.blackroses.com/~skip/fallride08/27.html through http://www.blackroses.com/~skip/fallride08/42.html One of the challenges that I had thrust upon myself was that I didn't have the car charger for the GPS I had picked up recently. that left me turning it on, figuring out where I was, then shutting it off. I tried a couple places to find a charger, to no avail. battery life is... well, not good. what I'd like to be able to do is to turn off the display and just have audio prompts, but i haven't figured out a way to do that. I suspect that it may not be possible. Another challenge was that my cellphone had gotten rained on earlier in the week, and the keyboard was f$cked. The sim card was out of my work phone, so I just moved it back to the phone they'd given me. problem solved... sort of. I had no addressbook, and since the advent of cellphones, I've stopped dedicating effort to remembering phone numbers. I was able to remember KB's after several attempts, and she got ahold of Ozzie's number for me. I let him know what was up, and he called Georgette to let her know I was en route. I showed up without beer, but did go out and get some more bbq. I don't remember the place, but it rocked. I ate until I thought I was going to pop. Ozzie had been visiting his kids, so he didn't get home until late. we bullshitted for a couple hours, and started watching a movie, whereupon I promptly fell into a coma on the sofa. they were nice enough to wake me so I could stumble to bed. :~) http://www.blackroses.com/~skip/fallride08/43.html though http://www.blackroses.com/~skip/fallride08/45.html Ozzie left for work before I got up, so Georgette and I went out for breakfast, and the wait staff kept staring at my shirt, which read, "I got press-ganged at ConFusion, and all I got was: Rum, Sodomy, The lash, this t-shirt" it was a source of endless amusement, and I was going to try to get the waitstaff's picture, but the vibe of the clientele changed, and I didn't think they'd go for it. I headed out, bound for Galax, which should have been a very reasonable destination. I ended up taking the long way, and sometimes the wrong way, and the battery on the GPS went dead, but I made it, by way of JR Cigars (http://www.jrselma.com/)and a road to remember, Lambsburg road, VA-620. The Galax motel has treated me very well in the past, so I made it a point to go there again. The room was clean, the bed was comfortable, and it was quiet - all things I wanted out of my motel room. as a plus, it's cheap, too. http://www.blackroses.com/~skip/fallride08/46.html through http://www.blackroses.com/~skip/fallride08/48.html I charged up the GPS and planned out the next day's route... I found a couple of the roads that Ed describes as "drawn by an epileptic", and figured out how to get there. on the way, it was a brilliant day, and the trees were in full color. I pulled into a Cemetary to do some shooting. http://www.blackroses.com/~skip/fallride08/49.html through http://www.blackroses.com/~skip/fallride08/82.html The first squiggle road, Broadway, turned out to be gravel, so it wasn't as much fun as I'd hoped for, but I got some very nice vistas, and plenty of alone time. I took a break, had an apple, and tried to figure out how to get where i wanted to be - the next squiggle road. The road that it dropped me onto, though, Whipoorwill, was a good one. It turned out that the best thing to do was to hop on 77 north for about 5 miles. The town I came into to try and find the slab was Wytheville, and I was hungry. the place that grabbed my eye was "Ocean Bay Family Seafood Restaurant," and it rocked! > > http://www.mytravelguide.com/restaurants/profile-58158505-United_States_Virginia_Wytheville_Ocean_Bay_Seafood.html I found the slab, and when I got on, had a good laugh. it was 81 South/77 North, and the road was headed West. Well, either I missed the exit, or I misread the map and there wasn't one, but I ended up on a different road than what I wanted. I knew where this one went, so I just kept going. I was keeping an eye out for where my squiggle road met up with my current road, and though I thought I nailed it on the first try, it looks like it was a different one than I intended. this one was paved all the way, 1.75 lanes, and completely deserted. w00t! I stopped at the top, but couldn't hang out too long.... I've never been attacked by ladybugs before, but they were swarming, and they bite! I had no idea they bite... it was nuts. http://www.blackroses.com/~skip/fallride08/83.html through http://www.blackroses.com/~skip/fallride08/93.html my squiggle road led me to a few other choice WV roads, and I rolled into Elkins around 4. I had borrowed some camping gear on my last trip, and was returning it. Now, the last time i stopped into Elkins (prior to borrowing the camping gear) was with Eddie Rock, and we had gotten some of the best steaks I'd ever had. I decided that I'd get a steak, and make it to dad's cabin, near Romney. I wanted to make it before dark, but that didn't happen. I made it, though, and had a steak, smashed taters, and wine. mmmmmm. I'm going through my pictures, which were in order. and one night, I camped. but I am having a hard time figuring out which night... it must have been Tuesday, because I know I was at the cabin on Wed night, and I know I was in galax monday night. It was a full moon, so i got good and liquored up, and played with the camera. http://www.blackroses.com/~skip/fallride08/94.html through http://www.blackroses.com/~skip/fallride08/109.html so wednesday i went to romney, by way of Beartown State Park http://www.blackroses.com/~skip/fallride08/110.html through http://www.blackroses.com/~skip/fallride08/126.html Eddie Rock lost his pics of this place - so i took some for him. http://www.blackroses.com/~skip/fallride08/127.html through http://www.blackroses.com/~skip/fallride08/135.html and even though it was getting late, the sign for "the smallest church in the 48 states" grabbed me. http://www.blackroses.com/~skip/fallride08/136.html through http://www.blackroses.com/~skip/fallride08/152.html Thursday dawned ugly. it got worse, too. but it was still beautiful to be out riding, instead of in the office... http://www.blackroses.com/~skip/fallride08/153.html through http://www.blackroses.com/~skip/fallride08/155.html I met up with KB in Ohio Thursday evening. I was not prepared for that kind of cold. It too hours to get up to harrisonburg... i got some food and got warmed up, and decided to just press on. I had on ever stitch of clothing that i had with me, plus my rain suit, and I'd shoehorned a pair of wool gloves over my crash gloves, and squeezed them into my rain covers. I could barely move, and I was still horribly, horribly cold. I was droning. I left Harrisonburg about 12am. I passed the aftermath of "Black Bear vs. Semi". I happened to be in the left lane, the remnants were in the right lane. lucky, cause there were *big* pieces. and then about 10 minutes from home, I got hit by a deer. it came out of the bushes into the ditch, took two jumps in the direction I was traveling, than hung a hard left into me. I got knocked pretty good, but I didn't even slow down. I checked my leg, which didn't feel broken, and i couldn't feel blood running into my boots, and the bike was still running, so I pressed on. I got lucky on that one. so all in all, it was an excellent week! --skip _______________________________________________ dc-cycles mailing list dc-cycles@XXXXXX http://dc-cycles.org/mailman/cgi-bin/listinfo/dc-cycles _ _ _ _ .-.-.=\-. .-.-.=\-. .-.-.=\-. .-.-.=\-. --skip _______________________________________________ dc-cycles mailing list dc-cycles@XXXXXX http://dc-cycles.org/mailman/cgi-bin/listinfo/dc-cycles _______________________________________________ dc-cycles mailing list dc-cycles@XXXXXX http://dc-cycles.org/mailman/cgi-bin/listinfo/dc-cycles _ _ _ _ .-.-.=\-. .-.-.=\-. .-.-.=\-. .-.-.=\-. I put everything together on Friday after work. it took a couple hours, but I finally got on the road - Destination: Corolla, NC. It's about 5.5 hours in the car, so I was looking at a 1am arrival. no worries, I can sleep in the next day. [Dave] These sort of decisions never work out well. Particularly when the author makes it a point to mention it in a trip report. [Dave] Yup, I knew it. After nearly dozing off, I decided that a rest stop would be a wise choice. I napped and rested for a couple hours, and got back at it. Coming into Hampton Roads, I was just droning, when I got passed by a sportbike, running WFO, at a delta V of an order of magnitude. I about shit my pants... but even that jolt of adrenaline wasn't enough to keep me awake, and I made 3 more stops before arriving at the beach at around 6am. http://www.blackroses.com/~skip/fallride08/1.html through ... [Dave] Skip, thanks for the excellent report. A few things. 1: I'm convinced that moto rags nowadays are deteriorating and I often find more adventurous, interesting and just plain better writing on the internet. In this case, DCC. 2: Yours is the first trip report I've --ever-- read which used the word "fulgent". :-) 3: You're definitely not geezing.
