Triumphs, Norton's, The Big4... and you tended to see more out on the West Coast or the Southwest, as the weather allowed riders to ride year round, or at worst 10 months out of the year. Those bikes weren't really distressed, they were weathered. Some folks like that look. And you could probably guarantee those rat bikes weren't stalked and ripped off too often. It's like beater trucks or junker cars, they run, they're cheap (used to be) and the owners can get their knees in the breeze without all the cosmetic fuss. I believe there are even web sites dedicated to rat bikes. It's a sub-culture. As for HD, couldn't care less, I've been on Triumphs and Beemer's since the mid 70's. I don't ride British anymore, just good old German engineering, the ring of the Ruhr and all of that. As for M/C's in general as fashion accessories -- all makes could come under that caveat, hey I bought my first bike in 72 (a Yamaha 360 enduro) to be "cool", Dad wasn't too impressed when at 16 I came ring-dinging up to the house on that... but I was working at Fennell Brothers Mobile at 7-Corners and making BIG money for a high schooler, there wasn't a whole lot he could say... but he did anyway! Seeing how he and Grand pappy were both HD Dresser riders (Shriners) maybe he laid off of me a little, but only a little. Oh, and anyone who doesn't think the Shriner's precision MC drill teams aren't posers.... but they can ride andthey are unbelievably adept at imbibement too! Talked to a couple of them and then watched a whole crew of HD riders, flying their colors, ride by. This ride isn't /that/ exciting -- way too much "big" road to cover before getting to more "fun" road, but I guess that goes with living in this area. No idea on milage -- am still waiting on AZ motorsports to send me the speedo cable link part to repair that. Am finding that not having a working speedo means one less distraction to have to look at however. Yesterday was the first trial of the new Autocom intercom system. Didn't get it bike mounted, just, for now, stuck it into the tank bag. It was good to have, good to be able to know when it was time for a break, and such. The microphone audio seems a bit low -- need to futz around a bit and see if I can improve it. I have to keep reminding her that her turn signals aren't automatic. After the 6th or 7th stop, wave her next to me, "turn signals", she figured it out. We crossed Dale Blvd up at Barksdale and wandered around in there. She found out where her boss lives when we turned at a cul-de-sac. She found it amusing that when she waved, he waved back but with the blank look. Lots of little kids running around; "Hey Harley man" and various waving. We went by lots of bikes sitting on the street or in driveways and only a couple riding. She practiced up hill stop signs (throttle, clutch, foot brake). At one point, I pulled into the street so she could concentrate on the coordination instead of traffic. She got it at the other stops. She enjoyed the ride and I enjoyed the weather. He was running from said cops, w/ all lights off...at well over 100mph on a major urban road (the road is kinda like Columbia Pike is in Arlington); he t-boned a car with a couple of honor students who were just leaving a study session. Rode yesterday too - was overcast, but dry. Did the Arlington, Northwest up the MD side of the Potomac, Cross at White's Ferry, and back on the Virginia side ride again. Had my wife with me on the back. We're discovering that, for her anyhow, pillion on the VFR isn't very comfortable. We stopped at the ferry and grabbed some food. There seemed to be plenty of other bikers making short stops there. Tried it with a radio (2m ham) on the way to work this morning - got a similar "low audio" report from another station. See ya No, but at the risk of *completely* throwing this discussion to a different topic, I had a sparrow nosedive into my leg and imbed it's beak while I was riding down in Va. Beach. I was going about 60mph and didn't realize what happened until I felt this *serious* burning sensation just above my left knee. I looked down and this bird was flapping around and apparently got it's beak wrapped up in the fiber of my jeans after putting a 1/2" deep hole into my leg. I stopped and it fell off but it didn't look too good. I bled like a stuck pig until I got home, then had to go to the emergency room where they gave me some shots and taped the hole shut. Hurt like hell for about 2 weeks. Swelled up like a third eyeball..all purple and green. Yeech. Bird beak puncture wounds majorly suck. As some of you may remember, I am the guy who had the bike and all the gear except the helmet, and wanted to start riding ASAP. I ended up going to Coleman in Falls Church to get a cheap helmet to carry me through the parking lots as I shop around on the net for a quality helmet. In the end, however, I bought a Shoei TZ-1 Venom helmet they were blowing out for a reasonable $255 OTD. Now getting to the good part. As I was trying on other helmets for size, another customer right next to me completely dropped a Shoei helmet as he was taking it off. It hit the ground hard and tumbled quite a bit. None of the Coleman salespeople seemed to be the least bothered by this. That's when I made a mental note to never buy a helmet if it was used for display purposes :) Similarly, customer service rivaled that of socialist France. When I asked if the helmet is Snell95 or Snell2000, the salesguy thought about it, then said he's not sure and just walked away. When I asked another sales guy if they had R6 frame sliders, he said they would have to order them, at which point he turned around and resumed a very heated conversation with a coworker behind the counter regarding which merchandise they should pitch and sell to customers, because they get different commission on different things. There also seems to be some friction between this location and another Coleman location or some other shop... I'm finally riding my R6 That said, even despite all the rain and other obligations, I started to ride around this past 3-day weekend. I started by playing with the friction zone, then proceeded to walk the bike, ride in a straight line, break hard, start taking some turns, etc. Top speed never exceeded 35mph. I want to get my slow maneuvers down before going faster. My first impression is that the R6 is easy to balance, even for me. I can flatfoot the bike with one leg, or tiptoe with both legs. As funny as this may sound, the motorcycle kinda feels like my road bicycle: nimble, responsive, and precise. I also found the R6 to be very comfortable. I guess that's what happens if you've been riding a road bicycle for the last couple of years! hehehe... That said, there are some areas that I need to work on :) Sometimes I forgot to turn my head enough to make nicer 90-degree turns. Also, on few occasions, I slipped it into neutral, (from 2nd) inadvertently. This is the only source of discomfort on the bike: keeping my ankle pointing up... Since I got it into neutral, I suspect that I ride the back brake sometimes as well. BTW, this mostly happened when I was braking... Other than that, I will need to spend some time on riding smoother. The bike is pretty twitchy in 1st, but things get much smoother in 2nd. Overall, it's not as hard as I thought it would be, but there's definately areas that I need to work on. I though I would let you guys know. Witold PS. I'm still planning to put frame sliders on the bike, but I'm having a heck of a time taking off the fairing. One screw in particular feels like it's been superglued in! All I managed to do is mess it up with the screwdriver... I might just hand it off to a dealer to do the work. If they can unscrew that fairing, they will have earned their money :) From dc-cycles-request@XXXXXX Tue Sep 3 15:02:42 2002 Return-Path: Received: from dirty.meretrix.com (localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1]) by dirty.meretrix.com (8.12.5/8.12.5) with ESMTP id g83J2gSi013696; Tue, 3 Sep 2002 15:02:42 -0400 Received: (from slist@localhost) by dirty.meretrix.com (8.12.5/8.12.5/Submit) id g83J2gXF013688; Tue, 3 Sep 2002 15:02:42 -0400 X-Authentication-Warning: dirty.meretrix.com: slist set sender to dc-cycles-request@XXXXXX using -f content-class: urn:content-classes:message MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft Exchange V6.0.5762.3 Subject: Re: A Coleman PS experience/R6 riding Date: Tue, 3 Sep 2002 14:00:00 -0500 Message-ID: <16139506CDB26245BB37BF17A6419623042B9FC1@nt-hqexbh1.boiseoffice.com> X-MS-Has-Attach: X-MS-TNEF-Correlator: Thread-Topic: Re: A Coleman PS experience/R6 riding Thread-Index: AcJTfGjax/Qo6yzHRVmVvx9WU6g5pQ== From: To: , Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit X-MIME-Autoconverted: from quoted-printable to 8bit by dirty.meretrix.com id g83J2eSi013676 I would suggest going to Sears and purchase a Impact screwdriver and a Rubber mallet, to get that screw off, Unless the dealer is wiling to do it for free...you might as well order some new fairing screws. (When you whack it, it turns the screw driver bit about 1/32 of a turn. Combined with the force of impact, which drives the bit in harder and knocks and maybe even relaxes the torque on the screw, it can get just about any philips screw out.) A google search led me to this description: www.thetoolwarehouse.net/shop/LIS-29200.html If you don't want to wait, come to my house and I'll get it out in 10 seconds (assuming phillips head). --jon -----Witold wrote: > One screw in particular feels like it's been superglued in! At the very least get a decent socket set and some good screwdrivers. I have had tons of screwdrivers made by craftsman and grizzly and all the home depot brands and used them to strip the heads of countless screw. Then one day I happened to be at a dealership when the Snap-On dude was there. I bought 2 phillips/posi drivers for $25. I cannot stress enough that, for me, those screwdrivers have been worth every penny. They fit the screwheads better, allow me to put more force on the screw when twisting and even have a hex collar that allows the use of a wrench for a really tight screw. I've mangled a couple of screws using these screwdrivers, but that's because I shoulda been using an impact driver from the get go (right George?). Use your regular clear visor and put one or two strips of black electrical tape (NOT duct tape) along the top edge. If you do it carefully enough it looks clean and will usually block the setting/rising sun from blinding you. I get the same problem with my tinted shield by the way - scratches too easily. Almost all bikes run *wet* ctutchs (Yates, see if you work with that straight line) and any gasket that fails will cause a leak. Of course, it could be leaking an excess of clutch cable lubricant. Service personal can be overzealous with the squirt cans at times. Bottom line: Bike runs, why worry? But you're welcoem to drop by my dangerously cluttered garage in Annandale and I'll take a peek at it. I won't even scream if it pisses oil on the floor. The two Harleys and one Norton aren't litter box trained. I look at oil as concrete preservation! Did the shop lube your cables when they serviced your bike? Anyhow, it should stop by itself. FYI I expect your owners manual states that no lube should be used on your cables (it could degrade the Teflon coating on the inner cable) I would not worry about it, but that is what Honda has been saying about lubing cables for some time. Last afternoon rain I thought I was riding on black ice. These gravel roads are tearing them up. My D220 rear is on the way, but I just learned that the front is on backorder for two weeks. Dunlop is behind on shipments of the new line. I have a D207 front in the garage, but I am a bit worried about mixing them up. It has 4k on it and looks pretty new. The rear was shot in 4k on the 207s. Thoughts? Suggestions? PS - In Clifton they have had cops at the tracks and stop sign a couple times lately. Pulling for inspections and county stickers. A bunch of my friends are racing 2-stroke scooters this year. There's no word as to whether they'll be on the big track as they have been for their last three races or whether they'll be on the Jefferson Circuit. If anyone is up for a good laugh you should watch the stock and highly tuned Vintage Scooters tear up the track. Some of the racers are former Vintage Motorcycle/Superbike/Supercross racers and are quite good. One of the guys has a super-tuned small-frame Vespa that runs times that are competitive with the GP series bikes. You can register before by downloading a form and sending it in, or register at the event the day of. It's $5 if you register before, $8 if you register the day of. Your registration fee gets you lunch and if you register in advance you get a patch for your jacket too. I didn't do this ride last year but heard it was a nice time. Anyone want to join me for this?
