I wear a Shoei RF 200. As a result of that discussion, I bought an orange face shield for it. Today, I replaced it with a clear shield. The orange shield is a good compromise between the glare and sun protection of a dark face shield and the light transmission one needs to be able to see at night. In my opinion, it is not a permanent replacement for either of the other types of face shield. During the day, the orange shield was very close to being as good as the dark gray one. Most of the glare is eliminated, it was much more comfortable to have the shield down in the sunlight than to be without it. At night with the orange shield, I felt like I needed to have the high beam headlight on. There were a couple of times when I actually checked to make sure my light was on. It does block some of the glare from oncoming cars, but I did not feel I gained enough from that to make up for the loss from not being able to see as far ahead. It does allow enough light through that one can see to get home. With a gray tinted face shield, I never put it down at night, I just couldn't see well enough. For summer use, when glare reduction is important, and darkness comes late, the orange shield may be the right choice. If you carry a passenger, the passenger will probably prefer a darker shield. Now that winter is approaching, and more of my riding will be in the dark, I'm going back to the clear shield. For next summer, I'll probably stay with clear. I'd rather put up with the glare than the loss of seeing details at night. I was turning right onto Canal road off of Arizona Ave., when I encountered a rather substantial crater just around the corner, too late to miss it. The lighting down there is also so dim that I am not sure I would have seen it had I already been on Canal Road. I am not sure who is responsible for the maintenance of Canal Road at this location. Does anybody know if it is the District or the Park Service's responsibility? I would like to vent a little in the form of a letter to somebody. I am sick of constantly having to repair the cage and the bike in an effort to keep myself mobile in the metro area. I imagine this could spark a long list of bad roads in the area, but also beware of Roosevelt bridge. I ended up on Canal road to take Chain Bridge because I was tired of tearing up rims on Roosevelt. Joe S. Mine are clamped. And I realized this weekend that what might really be the problem, is that they're just too far forward. I like to sit up straight whilest I ride instead of hunched over forward. If I rode slumped over, then the bars would be in just the right place. But since I generally like to kinda lay back and cruise, well they pull on my wrists wrong. So, what finally dawned on me, is to simply loosen the clamps and drop the stupid things an inch or two. This'll also change the angle that my wrists are relative to the handgrips, which should help too... And then of course, loosen clutch and brake and re-adjust them... But yeah bending the bar is probably a bad idea anyway, since at the very least it would make microfractures in the chrome and cause me to have to get the whole thing re-chromed or watch it rust away... OK, the above was written yesterday (Monday)... And, after riding in (what a beautiful day too!) to work and back, and having that same old annoyance... well, when I got home, I whipped out the old tool box... Loosened the clamps on the handlebars, and *dropped* 'em about 1 1/2 inches. This resulted in a few side-effects. 1: the grips are lower, 2: the angle at which the bars meet my wrists is now more within range, 3: the grips are actually closer to my body, meaning that I no longer have to stretch towards the grips while cruising along. End result: problem 90% solved! Had to re-adjust the clutch and brake and stuff while I was at it too tho... Turns out, that what I think was the real problem was that the bars were just too far forward, making it so I had to stretch my shoulders forward into a non-natural position, which in turn inhibited blood flow, which resulted in wrist/arm fatigue... Whatever, the cruise in to work this morning was great! Wrist/arm fatigue 90% gone! I say 90%, but the remaining 10% was probably just due to a bit of shivering in the cold.... I grew up in S.Dak., and have a sister in Park City, UT. I've not been that far west in November, but she says that Park City is as cold as South Dakota. You can figure that November on I-80 west of Chicago is roughly equal to Jan/Feb here. Montana is colder than that. There will of course be warm days (just like here in Jan/Feb) but you can also expect a few 15-20 or colder days. Montana does lack a speed limit, but that doesn't mean you can go any faster there than anywhere else. The speed limit in Montana is reasonable and prudent. If there is any traffic on the road at all or it is dark, speeds over 80 or so may not be reasonable or prudent. There are a couple of articles on the Montana (lack of a) speed limit on the IronButt Web page (http://www.ironbutt.com) Dress Warm, have fun, be prepared to wait out the snow storms. In November it is unlikely that I80 will get closed for more than a couple of days. -------- End Respones, Begin .Sig -Mb ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Morris Berman, morris@XXXXXX, http://www.glue.umd.edu/~morris/ MSB, PFD, WTD, ARL <-- Obviously a Government Employee '96 Kawasaki GPz1100 (DoD #1237), Scuba, Skiing, AMA (M/C) #446884 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- No one is responsible for what I say...well, OK, maybe me. -=-=-=-=-=> PGP Key Available Upon Request, MIME Messages Accepted <=-=-=-=-=- From dc-cycles-request@XXXXXX Wed Oct 16 20:39:34 1996 X-Sender: nranone2@XXXXXX X-Mailer: Windows Eudora Light Version 1.5.4 (32) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Date: Wed, 16 Oct 1996 20:37:12 -0400 To: dc-cycles@XXXXXX From: Nick Ranone Subject: Truck Exhaust I need to have the exhaust system replaced on my truck, and I was wondering if someone knows a good (cheap) place to have it done. He said he would reduce it so it wouldn't be reckless driving (20 over in this case). He asked me to come back to the car with him, I did. As soon as we got in the car, he got a call for assistance in the HOV lanes just north of Rt 1. He handed back my license and registration and said I was free to go. He left quickly. In some states you cannot have a portable police scanner in your car (NJ comes to mind), and others will let you have them only if you are licensed amatuer (WV). 2. You cannot purchase a scanner that can monitor cellular phone calls (does your right to privacy supercede the right to receive radio signals?). It is easy though to modify them to do so; in fact it is a booming cottage industry. And with about $1000 worth of equipment crooks can even decode your cellular id. Result: Free cell phone service for a month! 3. There are certain areas of the country where you cannot legally operate a CB or ham radio; the area around the Greenbanks Observatory in WV is one such place. 4. The radar ban unfortunately has been held up in many court decisions. However it is not hard to get out of a conviction if the police caught you by means of a radar detector detector (and Virginia has them, courtesy of GEICO). Now for some good news: the FCC has made it illegal for towns to pass restrictions on residential antennas, including broadcast TV, radio, ham radio, and satellite TV. The FCC is now being petitioned to extend this ruling to home owners associations. AS the FCC has recognized antenna bans as contrary to the first amendment, you may be a little premature in making the leap from banning radar detectors to banning your right to watch re-runs of Married with Children. A TV, a radio, your wristwatch, your distributor, etc. I agree. The fact that it generates a reference frequency does _not_ make it a transmitter. If it did, you'd have to have an FCC license in order to legally own/operate a radar detector in the 49 states that comply with Federal regulations. This clearly is _not_ the case, tho' VA may try to make that argument. The police departments _do_ have to have licenses to operate their radar guns. It's a very weak argument. More likely than not, I'm sure some traffic court judge doesn't want to be the one to set the precident that might knock down that law. OTOH, if you were to take the effort and expense to buck it up to an appeals court... I live in MD but use my radar detectors in DC and VA. In the case of the radar DETECTORS, the RF emission is a side effect. I have no problem with radar JAMMERs being illegal. The jammers interfere with the proper enforcement of the law. It prevents the police from determining the speed of those who are breaking the law. I believe they have the right to sample traffic and accurately measure the speed of individual drivers. A detector does not interfere with the police doing this, it simply alerts the driver that RF energy of a particular frequency is in the area. It is legal to transmit a little bit if this noise (actually, it is really hard *not* to transmit a little bit of the LO) As long as the amount transmitted is below a limit well defined by the FCC. But that LO is what the detector-detectors look for. The better radar detectors use an uncommon LO, and have the LO leakage well controlled, to further limit the emissions. Radar detectors are not illegal in Virginia because of licensing issues. As far as I know all radio licensing is handled by the Federal Government. Yeah, it is contradictory to the Communications Act of 1934, but so is the Electronic Communication Privacy Act which makes listening to Cellular Phones a Federal crime. Laws don't have to make sense, but they require a court challenge or more enlightened lawmakers to fix 'em. I don't have the money for the first, and I have no hope for the second. I just won't use my Radar Detector in VA and DC. ----------------------------- Matt Bennett | mjb@XXXXXX | http://www.hazmat.com/~mjb/ | From dc-cycles-request@XXXXXX Thu Oct 24 11:47:41 1996 Date: Thu, 24 Oct 1996 10:46:05 -0500 (CDT) From: thomas yeung To: suzuki-l@XXXXXX cc: "Christopher A. Basically you need to notify DMV for the following reasons: 1. To deactivate your license plates - this will ensure that if the places show up in the commission of a crime, you won't be held liable. 2. To deactive the title...as long as the title is active on the VIN, it cannot reissue the title under someone elses name. There's a cross reference index that the system uses to make sure someone doesn't steal your bike and try and reregister it in their name with the same VIN number. Don't laugh, there's *alot* of stupid criminals out there...it's been tried more than once... 3. It moves the registraton information from the active to the inactive database, thus clearing up the active database of "sold" vehicles. You also won't keep getting those annoying renewal notices in the mail year after year. You can accomplish all of the following at any DMV or just mail in the registration with the new owner info on the back. Or...you can turn in your old plates at any DMV and tell them the vehicle was sold. They can enter in the plate number and deactivate your registration/vehicle right there. I don't even think you have to know the name of the owner to do this. Either way, it's always a good idea to not leave strings hanging on a vehicle you're no longer responsible for. This makes sure that you don't end up having the police knock at your door some night accusing *you* of commiting a felony on a vehicle that wasn't properly deregistered under your name. Best to make a clean break of it all IMHO... ;-) cheers, -aki From dc-cycles-request@XXXXXX Thu Oct 24 18:08:42 1996 Date: Thu Oct 24 17:58:49 1996 X-Mailer: Panda-2.0e From: Brian McCoy To: cnorloff@XXXXXX Cc: dc-cycles@XXXXXX Subject: Re: Inform DMV when sell vehicle? The bike was originally black. The friend of a friend saw another paint job that he really liked. He went over to that bike in Georgetown one night with his battery operated heat gun and X-acto knife. He carefully removed all of the decals from the old bike. Then he ordered part #44580AH from Honda (the decal applique glue) and re-applied the decals to his own bike. It's not in the greatest shape, but mechanically it runs very well. Here's a little about it: When I bought it last Jan 96, it had just had new carbs and a new black paint job. When I got it, I immediately put new tires and new battery into it. Over the summer my signifiant other and I have put about 100 or 150 miles on the bike and it has had an oil change and tune-up. There's a little scattered surface rust on the wheel covers and a lttle on the exhaust, but a little TLC and you could probably fit it up. All totalled there are approx 8,200 miles on the bike. There was one other owner beside myself and it was covered during bad weather. It's a good bike, but because it's an 82, it's not a "brand new" bike, nor does it look like one. It is currently under a current VA inspection and it WILL pass the 97 inspection with NO problem. Everything works, and it's a comfortable bike. Only reason for selling is that I live in a condo, no place to store it and I choose not to take up riding any further. With winter coming on, neither myself nor my mate will be riding it and I don't want to pay insurance and inspection if it's not being used. I am flexible and negotiable as to price. I paid $800 in Jan and have put approx. $300 into it, but don't mind negotiating whatever price you can afford. Any and all inquiries can be made to: debra.mantei@XXXXXX Would like to sell NLT 1 Dec. Prices are reasonable, their shop is one of the cleanest and best organized I've seen in a while, and they have decent turn-around times. At all cost, avoid going to either Coleman Power Sport shops, I still haven't recoverred from their damage (what they did to my bike, and the $$$ they charged to break it, all derived from a simple mounting of a front tire!!) Also, from the posts I have seen and talking to others, there is a place called Crossroads Cycle in/very near the District that is excellent, but they are small and sometimes backed up....I'm sure others will mention it.
