Late lunch though... didn't get there until after 3:00 pm. The other folks headed back at different points to meet other obligations.. no mishaps that I know of! Herb was on his Magna in the group, so Ursulina didn't have the only cruiser! I'm still getting the hang of using the GPS, okay? Sheesh! :-) Besides, it's not a REAL group ride if there isn't at least one u-turn! I can't believe I was ever intimidated by an XT350 (my old bike, now Todd's). Todd does have a lot of bikes in his garage! Leed's Manor Road (688) is still my favorite road, and I only scared myself 2x. Kirk is fortunate to have such an excellent dirt riding area only 3 miles from his house! There are at least 4 distinct wall climbing style areas, a network of tight, twisty, and sometimes muddy trails and a whole bunch of opened areas. If I had to guess I'd say the whole area covers around 12 square miles. That being said, we only put about 30 miles on the bikes today over a 2.5 hour period. What a f-ing blast! Crashes: Me - two and many close calls Daryl(crash king) - at least three that I saw, one bad one into Kirk at relatively high speed Kirk - just the one Daryl caused This was my first "real" dirt riding experience and I'm amazed I don't have any scrapes or broken bones. Some of the hills we were climbing were a good 30-40 feet high and at close to 60 degrees angle. At one point we were competing for how much distance in air we could get before hitting the next berm/hill. I had the lead until crazy Daryl went sky high into/onto the berm and almost into a little pine next to the trail. Excellent day, and thanks Kirk and Daryl for inviting me. Or just the fact that I was the only one out there with real knobbies? Maybe both! :) I think Darrell's getting well past the point that the street oriented tires are a real hindrance. He needs some other tires. Oh, and for the record one of his crashes was really just falling down. We've started separating real crashes (which he had two yesterday and only three total since we've returned to dirt riding) from falling down (which both of us have done countless times and is probably what you were doing). I suspect he'll be favoring crashes until he replaces those tires... Todd's tires are even more street oriented. It won't be long before your speed and tire grip are at odds with one another and you too can add legitimate crashes to your repertoire! :) > At one point we were competing for how much distance in air we could > get before hitting the next berm/hill. So THAT's what you guys were doing... Folks, picture this - two guys on fairly heavy dirt bikes (both XT350s) jumping for distance! :) > Excellent day, and thanks Kirk and Daryl for inviting me. Definitely > want to do it again....boy am I sore... :) Yep, but not as sore as Darrell. His left knee was swollen to about the size of a grapefruit. It started hurting about 8:00pm last night and I had him in the ER by 9:00. This was several hours after we'd finished riding. Hopefully percoset and a short period of rest will take care of it. Nothing was broken. The armor goes back into my pants - it's not hot enough out that I want to chance an experience with something like that. The catch is you have to fly on the same plane and ride your bike through customs, although it is treated as a normal tourist vehicle that way as long as you don't decide to live in Germany for more than 6 months. You need to get insurance valid in Europe of course, but he has a line on where that is available, I didn't ask because I have an agent in Italy who insures a car I keep there and would use her. As for myself, I've taken my Superhawk up to (indicated) 130, but only briefly on long straight stretches of empty roads. I personally don't like the thought of getting pulled over or wrecking at that speed, but I can't (or won't) allow myself to obey speed limits all of the time. I'm starting to become more and more enamoured of the idea of "fast through the turns, slower on the straights" that some people on the list have mentioned in the past. Opinions? Back in Oklahoma where i was on a nice long straight road where you could see all the way to the horizon, I took my old 93 GSXR750 to an indicated 167 mph (hit a damn dove as I passed 145!!! yuck!!). Race bike sees redline in 6th gear once per lap!! ;-) Dunno how fast that is exactly, but it's hauling! On the street, I generally feel comfortable riding about 7-8 tenths of capability in the corners and slower in the straights... but that varies from bike to bike... I generally like to ride in a style similar to "The Pace" (Kirk has a link to it on his page). I keep the speeo around 70 and occasionally brake for a corner, but generally carry as much corner speed as possible. And I try to keep it under 70 on the straights for sure... That usually worked out to be about 6 tenths of what the GSXR could handle, and about 8 tenths of what the Maxim can take. Priority: normal X-mailer: Pegasus Mail for Win32 (v3.01b) Okay, I'm not looking to start a debate on speed limits, how fast you should ride, or anything like that, but I do have a question. I was riding in MD yesterday, following an old PARR poker run route. We started at White's Ferry, wound up in Sharpsburg, and eventually Charles Town. The roads were nice, traffic was light and the scenery was beautiful. But, here's my question... is it me, or are the speed limits on rural roads in MD significantly lower than in VA? I mean, a road that seemed to be the equivalent of Rte 50 west of Middleburg, had a 40 mph limit. A nice road with good pavement, double yellow lines, etc., winding past farms (i.e. not residential neighborhoods) had a speed limit of 30 mph! I really had to keep my eye on my speed... my usual cruising at 50-55 mph would have been a ticket for reckless driving.. no thanks! :-) Anyhow, I was just curious if anyone else had noticed this about MD roads? ..it seems that most of the "fun" roads in Loudoun and Fauquier counties have a 45 mph limit... I can't recall seeing any 30's! Several friends and I hauled a fairly worked GSXR1100 (it'd been punched to 1346 or something like that, masivly ported heads, light-weight everything) out to a deserted road.. blocked it off with trucks and commensed doing high-speed runs (we borrowed Dynojets speed-gun).. Well, like the dumbasses we were, we chated about it on the CBs and the cops overheard.. I was the first to get tagged.. 187 in a 55.. I pulled back around to trade off with my roommate (who owned the bike) and the cop pulled up then to 'discuss' with us what the hell we were doing. (I might mention he came up on a jeep-trail, the only access to the portion of high-way we were using). After some talk, he wrote me a ticket for 187 in a 55.. $5, waste of natural resources.. It's framed (and burried in storage in Montana). He then wrote a ticket for my roomate doing 198 in a 55.. noone did get over 200 that day (though we did get a 200+ run in the wind several weeks later.. but couldn't hit an average in the +200s). (B) Your odds of getting negatives are almost nil. They are the property of the photographer, and he'll be loathe to give them up. And the route. On the Wing, for day-to-day stuff, I cruise at traffic speed. Usually in the right lane. I've never seen over an indicated 75 on it. On the BMW, I'll cruise at 70-75, 80-85 on the interstates, and have only seen an (indicated) 120 once. FWIW, the bike is actually smoother at 85 than at 65. I think the weight helps it settle down, and the engine is past the 'buzzy' point. ---------------------------------------- -George Howell ghowell@XXXXXX ghowell@XXXXXX georgehowell@XXXXXX "I ride because dogs have the right idea about car windows" > Not to bring up a machismo contest, but how fast do you guys/gals go on > your bikes? Slabbing it on a sunny day is a lot different than dicing with traffic. I prefer riding just faster than 50-75% of traffic - this minimizes the hazards behind me that are catching up to me. Of course, there will always be the idiot who wants to go 20-30 over, even in the dark, or with wet roads -- I try to position myself to stay out of his way. The older and more expereienced I get the more I realize what hazards are out there - going slower when conditions warrant is a good way to keep riding. Whenever I hear a rider say "the road went bad unexpectedly so I crashed" or "someone in front of me stopped short" then I know they were riding too fast for the conditions. Macho? Hell, it's harder to slow down than it is to just twist the throttle. Said he borrowed the guy's bike and was back around Waxpool / Redskins Park off of 28. Apparently he was doing close to 100 when a nice man pulled out in front of him. Startled by the site of the bike, the nice man stopped in the middle of the road. Biker hits car going 45, body found 300 feet from the scene of the accident. Fortunately, the body was alive - massive road rash, no spine or head injury, broken thumb and shattered ankle. Oh - and no insurance. He is a college student. Police ruled the accident the biker's fault due to speed and general stupidity on a blind curve. I hope he gets well soon, and finds some way to pay off his bills. When he gets out of the hospital that is.... So, that sort of deflated my new bike news around the office. ___________________________________________ Mike Troutman http://www.troutman.org '97 Honda VFR 750 Remember folks: Stop lights timed for 35mph are also timed for 70mph. How fast do you feel comfortable riding? Generally I'm loathe to go more than 20 mph over the posted speed limits, as I'm not in a hurry to pick up a reckless driving ticket either. But circumstances sometimes dictate otherwise. Baiting a group of squids, for example, has shown me 120 mph on the speedo. But that was one of my more stupid moments. When in serious LD mode, out on the highways, if I'm travelling near a group of faster traffic, I'll let them get ahead of me, and then just pace them. I'm comfortable doing this, with a cushion between me and anyone else, up to about 85 mph on the Concours, but 70-75 is more typical. The Connie is truly in it's element at those speeds. I'm generally much slower on twisty backroads, I also try to do the fast in the corners, slower in the straights kinda deal, but most of you folks would think my version of "fast" in the corners is pretty tame. If I average 45-50 mph on these kinda roads over time I'm doing pretty good. Another advantage of riding slower in the straights, you can get some pretty serious sightseeing done that way (one eye always on the road, of course). :) Dale === Dale Horstman (The Horkster) the_horkster@XXXXXX Dale City, VA, USA, Earth "I started riding away from home in order to feel the sweet sensation of missing it at the same time I love leaving it." - Melissa Holbrook Pierson "The Perfect Vehicle" _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? At that speed, you can usually count on being able to trail a ways behind a "rabbit" for cop bait (love those 5.0 Mustang guys!). On lonlier two-laners, I find that the bike and I are happiest at 80-85, adjusting as necessary for towns, likely speed-trappage, and swervery. 'Course, don't run at speeds that make you uncomfortable. It ain't a race out there. YMMV. Joe '85 900 Ninja >>> - 5/3/99 10:05 AM >>> Not to bring up a machismo contest, but how fast do you guys/gals go on your bikes? How fast do you feel comfortable riding, given the increasing rate of danger and proximity of police officers that comes with higher speeds? As for myself, I've taken my Superhawk up to (indicated) 130, but only briefly on long straight stretches of empty roads. I personally don't like the thought of getting pulled over or wrecking at that speed, but I can't (or won't) allow myself to obey speed limits all of the time. I'm starting to become more and more enamoured of the idea of "fast through the turns, slower on the straights" that some people on the list have mentioned in the past. Opinions?
