[btw, i had to watch my gas level carefully. on friday, after not having ridden for a month, i cranked up my bike only to find i had 2 stuck float valves. i fixed one on one of the two outside carbs but didn't have enough time to fix the stuck valve on an interior carb. i decided to make the ride since the bike was running fine. anyway, when one runs a 15 y.o. bike, one gets used to such hiccups.] the ride to harper's ferry on 340 was beautiful- -lots of rolling farmland and little towns. h.f. was spectacular. it's well worth a ride to see the quaint houses, the curious shops, and to read the historical markers near the river scenic overlook. one rider left early but the rest of us headed out at about 1230. the sport guys went back via rt 9 to do the twisties while the sedate riders returned via rt 7 and leesburg. i am sad to report that one of the group wiped out on a twistie on rt 9. he sustained a broken arm and some damage to his (still ridable) bike. [if there's anyone in the purcelville area or who knows of a good mechanic/shop there or is willing to help ride/transport his bike back to the dc area, pse let me know. the good news is that he expects to be riding again in 2 months. we wish him well.] my ride home was fairly uneventful. the only problem was i caught every light on rt 28 and watched with disdain while gas continued to leak from the carb with the stuck valve. (i was sure it would unstick itself during the ride. it hadn't.) when i got home, i parked the bike on some asphalt (you know where this is going!) to cool off before cleaning her up. an hour later, she was lying on her side. the bad news is my rear signal light is now angled down about 15 degrees. the good news is that the stuck float valve freed itself. how's that for innovative cycle repair? tnx to sash, barry, joe, john, steve and jim for the enjoyable ride. i hope that the wx will be more supportive for our next venture and more of you (and your friends) will be able to join us. i'm taking off for germany in 10 days and won't have time to set anything up before my return in mid-july (though i would like to shoot for something on the 22nd or 23rd. pse advise which date is best for you.). if i have time, i'll email the 'club' roster with 30 or so names and email addresses so you can browse the list to find your own local riding buddies. if you can't handle a 'word ' document, send me your home address and i'll post a cy to you. also, to make this group a true discussion group, one of our number has offered to set up an interactive list for us like dc-cycles. i'll be sending more info out about this in the next few days. stay tuned and stay upright. john From dc-cycles-request Mon Jun 5 16:06:08 1995 X-Sender: jimb@XXXXXX X-Mailer: Windows Eudora Version 1.4.3 Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Date: Mon, 05 Jun 1995 15:59:37 -0400 To: "Weinstein, John, Dr, NSS" , Bill Elwell , Chia Hui Huang , CKarras , cliff krieger , chris norloff , CPMJ69A , Robert M Darden , "Daniel S. Where is it usually publicized? I'm not criticizing (too much that is) but I've been reading rec.motorcycles faithfully for over a year and have yet to see any reference to it. Is there a summary of purpose for this list? On that note, is the dc-ride list necessary? I'm willing to host it but I don't necessarilly want to duplicate something already out there. Should we focus the list differently so that it appeals to a certain group - say make it "John W's Riding Buddies"? I have a friend who's giving me his GS550 for a song. It has low miles and is apparently in good shape, but the trouble is its been parked in his garage for a few yrs. He says last time he tried to start it (amongst other things) gas leaked from somewhere and it sounds alot like John's trouble with the sticky float valve. (I've once had similar trouble with an old RD350LC I bought in Australia for $50 but I just 'rode out' the problem and it soon fixed itself). The question: how do you fix such a sticky valve. I've imagined that the problem was a bit of gunk being stuck in the valve and holding it open, thus simply taking off the float bulb and jiggling the float a few times should do it. Are there any other tricks? Perhaps emptying the tank and rinsing a few times with fresh gas to clear any particulates that might find themselves in the float valve again(?) Any other tips/ traps for young players for getting a bike that has been parked a long time ready for the road? Any suggestions greatly appreciated. For some lists, requests are manually processed by humans. When you subscribe to these, please be sure to include your desired subscription e-mail address in the BODY of your message; don't count on the message headers containing anything useful to the human. It's also generally considered polite to include your actual name and city/state[province]/country location. Other lists have automated subscription-processing software. These require that you send some strictly-formatted and carefully-spelled text in either the "Subject: " line or the body of your message. Use the "TO SUBSCRIBE:" line as your guide, and check your spelling! Don't include the quotation marks, parentheses, etc. - just the information within them. If you have difficulty subscribing via the automated process and wish to reach a human for help, try mailing to the "LIST OWNER:" address. Some of the lists provide some access via the WorldWide Web. This is indicated in the "WWW URL" line above. The proper admin address for dc-cycles is actually: dc-cycles-request@XXXXXX If you'd like to subscribe or unsubscribe, please send a note to this '-request' address (I've sent Carl a note to fix this nit in his list). The 'dc-cycles@XXXXXX' address is for sending messages to the dc-cycles list itself, and subscribe/unsubscribe messages should not be sent here. BTW, this is the first mention of this, but the list moved to a 'cs.umd.edu' machine a few months back so the list address is technically 'dc-cycles@XXXXXX'. The 'dc-cycles@XXXXXX' address still works (it's an alias for the current list address), and probably will continue to work for a very long time, but it entails an extra hop to get to where the list really lives. No big deal, but feel free to leave off the 'umia' next time. :) Also BTW, in early March the dc-cycles list was setup so that messages are archived as they come in. There are two interesting MC events happening up around Cumberland Maryland this weekend (June 10 and 11). The first is on Saturday in Antioch West Virginia. The Thunder Valley Dirt Drags starts at 4:30 pm on Saturday. I hav'nt been to this site yet, however I have been to the Rawlings Dirt Drags which is only a few miles away. At Rawlings I've seen just about any kind of motorcycle from 50cc mini's to full blown nitro burning big bore monsters and every thing in between. They usually start late afternoon and go to the wee hours in the morning. It's definately a cool event to attend and hopefully the Thunder Valley Dirt dragers will put on an equally entertaining show. The other event is a flat track race at the Cumberland fairgrounds at 10 am on Sunday. This is a culminating event at a weekend motorcycle campout at the fairgrounds. I intend to attend the dirt drags, get a motel room for the night and then go to the flat track race on Sunday. Now the > burning question is why would anyone want to wear earplugs while riding? > Carl B. Before you make sweeping judgements, look at the other side. The fairing on my bike (BMW R100RS) is beautiful, amazingly protective, but also steers the wind right below my helmet. After a long ride without earplugs my ears ring from the constant wind noise. If I bend down and put my head lower, the noise goes away, but it is terribly uncomfortable. But I don't want a higher windwhield, because that height is optimum to eliminate turbulence. So what do I do? I wear earplugs. On a bike without a fairing, I do fine without earplugs. I wear them on longer (>10 min) trips with speeds over 50mph or so, since 50mph is just the beginning of where I need them. That ringing in your ears is just natures way of telling you "You have just suffered some hearing loss" The hearing loss of long term motorcyclists is signifigant. By wearing earplugs, I reduce the wind noise, and greatly reduce fatigue on long trips. If I did not wear earplugs, all I would hear would be the wind. I find I can hear the engine better also. Weather it signifigantly reduces other noises... yes it does, but earplugs function as filters, by filtering out some sounds, other sounds are heard better, in my opinion. Many professional motorcyclists wear them while riding, including most Motorcycle magazine editors. I started to wear earplugs after the audiologist found that I had some permanent hearing loss and *specifically suggested that I wear earplugs while riding*. I wear a full face helmet (always), and am easily able to hear other cars, sirens, etc. above my pipes and/or stereo, even when wearing earplugs.. The earplugs are used primarily for reduction of wind noise. I've gotten headaches from the wind roaring in my ears over a long ride. To say nothing of the potential for damage to one's hearing after prolonged exposure to the noise. If you haven't tried earplugs, do. I'm not saying to wear them all the time, I certainly don't. But you'll be surprised at how well you can hear while reducing wind roar. The wind noise exceeds safe hearing levels, and causes ringing or partial hearing loss after riding for only an hour or two. I can hear sirens, car tire noise as cars approach me from behind, and people when I stop to fill the gas tank. I hear all sounds, though they are at a reduced level. I think, though have not independently confirmed, that wind noise for bare heads, as well as half-helmets and many other helmets, exceeds the OSHA maximum noise levels for daily exposure. Continuous exposure WILL cause a hearing loss. As an aside, I found in Loudon and Daytona that ear plugs were mandatory if I rode on the right side of a Harley with aftermarket pipes-- painfully loud. I have gotten many responses saying that they wear ear plugs. Ok I'm out numbered. First I feel that I must let everyone know that I started riding when I was 9 years old and have ridden ever since with only 1 break for about 10 years. With that said I must also say that I do have PERMANENT hearing damage. The hearing damage is NOT from riding it is from the military (guns are very load), rock concerts (also very load), and 9 years of working in a very noisy computer room. Ok, now let me just say that I have MANY set of ear plugs and use them now when I go to rock concerts (I am a little smarter in my old age), NASCAR races, and any other noisy events that I don't need to hear other sounds around me. Since all of the responses have said that they can hear BETTER with the ear plugs in than with the ear plugs out I believe I will try them. That said I must tell you that when I have worn ear plugs in the past I am unable to hear other sounds like voices (unless they are yelling). I fully believe I would be able to hear a siren or tires squeeling, they are very load sounds. The question is would I be able to hear that car sneeking into the lane next to me? The response to all of the pro wanna-be's are "the pros wear them". Of course, the pros only have to worry about other pros that are going around the same track. Maybe the problem that I have is that I already have enough hearing loss that with ear plugs I can't hear enough to feel safe. I must tell everyone that the full fairing on the H-D full dresser DOESN'T give the wind noise that obviously most of the other bikes have. When I ride my Sportster I do get that wind noise but I never thought it was particularly loud. I put over 10k miles on my bike every year and have never had any ringing in my ears from it. I was diagnosed with Tinea (ringing in the ears) in the army. They told me that there is nothing that can be done once it is there, the ringing will come and go. I know that I have made it worse with the rock concerts and with work. I have taken to wearing them to the concerts and find them VERY uncomfortable after about an hour. I have tried wearing them at work but find it very difficult holding a conversation with anyone without removing them first. All of this said I will try them and see how they work. I am always saying, "What?" to people, and I think it's from years of rock concerts, working in rock clubs, shooting, and riding bikes. Oh, and listening to my mother scream. When working behind the bar at CBGB's, I used to wear earplugs that filtered out noise but still allowed me to hear people talk (talk _loudly_, that is!). I think they were called Sonics. They weren't cheap, but I can't remember the cost. A drum tech told me about them, so info on them can probably be found at a music store. Also, regarding the discomfort of wearing earplugs for an extended amount of time-- you can have earplugs custom made to fit your ear. I haven't tried these, but the people at the pistol range who have them say great things about them. Ask about them at your local gun store. I fully believe I would be able to hear a siren or tires >squeeling, they are very load sounds. The question is would I be able to hear >that car sneeking into the lane next to me? For me, the answer is YES. (I wear a full-face helmet, and sometimes ride with fairing sometimes not). I would not ride if I could not hear traffic. In heavy city "rush" hour traffic I leave the ear plugs out, but then I'm going plenty slow anyway. For regular riding: 2-lanes, 4-lanes, and Interstates, I can hear the car sneak into my blind spot and sit there. Another reason I wear ear plugs: pressure changes during Interstate riding. 3 to 4 lanes of traffic in my direction, with a mix of cars and trucks -- the trucks make such incredible pressure changes in the air as they pass, or as I pass, or as I follow them that I can feel my eardrums being pulled and pushed by the pressure waves. Ear plugs damped that out. If you use the foam ear plugs, the insertion method is critical for performance. Rolled up and inserted INTO the ear canal, you get 32-35dB attenuation. If the ear plug backs out of the ear canal until it is touching the outer part of the ear (pinniae sp?) then you're getting only maybe 15dB attenuation. I took one of the blind turns too fast, hit the gravel shoulder, and lost control of the bike. i jetisoned the bike as soon as I was on the ground, and rolled a couple times (still at speed) in the gravel shoulder. the bike ditched in the weeds. handy tip #1 - WEAR A HELMET. my head got wacked pretty hard rolling across the shoulder of the road. thanks to the helmet i sustained no head or neck injuries. not even a sore muscle. pretty amazing considering what the fall was like. handy tip #2 - WEAR LEATHERS. i'm bruised almost exclusively on the left leg which was the first thing to hit the ground. i was wearing leather chaps over denim jeans and sustained only a small patch of road rash on the knee. didn't even break the skin. the chaps weren't as lucky but that's ok. my jacket is an HG stealth pilot which sustained only minor scrapes. i was following a group of two other riders. a deliberate decision on my part through the whole trip since i didn't want to become an obsticle for other bikes, if i went down. besides i typically take things a little slower than everyone else. my bike is a honda cb750 nighthawk... a little heavy compared to the sport bikes. i must have gotten into a "flocking" mindset though and started trying to match speed with those ahead of me. tsk tsk tsk... not good. so I got a fractured arm and some pins put in my hand to set the thumb back in position to remind me to take it easy. i like rt 9 and harper's ferry road a lot. its very scenic, but also requires caution and perhaps more experience than i have. ride within your abilities, that's what the msf says, and its to be believed. i want to thank the other riders who were with me for scraping me off the road, getting me to the hospital, riding my bike to safe storage in purcellville, and transporting my bike home. generosity like this is what makes biking great when things get rough and is greatly appreciated. Yeah i owe some people bigtime. and yes i'm looking forward to getting back on the road. my fault. my lesson. have i forgotten anything? - Hacker "Life itself is... I've been riding 10 years, about 100,000 miles, and I still get with riders who go faster than I want to. I let them go ahead, and I figure I'll meet them somewhere up ahead. To me, that describes a soon-to-be-in-an-accident rider. I agree that taking the first step to avoid an accident is often the best defense, but avoiding the situation completely is still the best way to continue enjoying motorcycling, in my opinion. My intent was not to avoid riding in the rain (to continue the example), but rather to slow down and give more following distance, for instance. The bold-and-not-yet-old rider wouldn't slow down, counting on new tires or whatever. I guess some would say riding in the rain is bold; to me it's a manageable risk, but, say, riding in the snow is not. I ride a lot, and have been commuting a lot recently :-) My thoughts turn to how to keep riding. Even allowing a 1-in-a-1,000 risk means the problem is likely to occur if you ride enough. thanks, Chris Norloff From dc-cycles-request Wed Jun 14 16:20:02 1995 From: "Begeman, Leon" To: DC Cycles List Subject: RE: Plastic from a roll Date: Wed, 14 Jun 95 16:19:00 edt Encoding: 17 TEXT X-Mailer: Microsoft Mail V3.0 >Does anyone know where I could buy plastic from the roll? What I use though is a blue plastic tarp, just slightly bigger than my tent. I fold the leftover part under the tent so the rain doesn't get inside. What I like best about it is that when I'm not using it for a ground cloth, I can use it as a bike cover. It isn't perfect for either job, but it does work. Leon. In-Reply-To: <199506141724.NAA29830@mimsy.cs.UMD.EDU> I don't want to get into a contest about who's been riding the longest or the farthest, so I will only say that I have a lot more miles under my belt than the average motorcyclist, and I also consider myself to be "bold" in so far as I am not "meek". I do not believe that this is in a sure ticket to disaster, and I do believe that firm, decisive handling of a motorcycle is better than timidity. In most situations I will lean toward confident behaviour with a hint of aggression as being both more pleasurable and actually safer for me. Furthermore, no where did I suggest that the street should be treated like a race track. My point about vintage racers was that it takes a certain amount of boldness just be out there hauling butt around the track, and many vintage guys are quite vintage themselves. Maybe we're all just thinking of different connotations of bold, but it is not an insult in my mind. It is not reckleness or foolhardiness, it is sure and confident control of situations in which others might be more inclined to hold back, panic or otherwise have trouble. To me, non-assertiveness gets at least as many riders into problem situations as recklesness does. By the way, though Hechinger did not have the plastic I wanted as previously reported, I did manage to find 6 mil plastic in a 10'x25' roll for my tent's ground cover at Home Depot. For 9$ I got enough that I can make into four appropriately sized footprints. Much better than what outdoors stores charge. (EMS charges 14.50 for a piece of 11'x11' plain 6 mil plastic that would only make two footprints, both a few inches short.) It actually did cool me down. Yes, it IS slow. But there are a number of GOOD reasons for this. 1. You never know when you'll round a corner only to find some moron stopped in the middle of the road looking at something. 2. Large branches have been known to fall from the trees, blocking part of the road. You don't want to be surprised by one of THESE as you come around a curve either. 3. Deer are quite common, and I know that more than one motorcylist has been killed because of a deer jumping in his path. 4. The park service is frequently doing construction or mowing operations and have heavy equipment in the road, often blocking one lane entirely. I recommend travelling Skyline drive on weekdays. There are FAR more cars and winne-dildos (winnebagos, for those who have less disdain for them) on the Drive on the weekends. I've travelled the entire length of the Drive (and most of the Blue Ridge Parkway) a couple of times on tuesday or wednesday. It's WONDERFUL. I try to hold to 5 mph above the speed limit. Yeah, I'd really enjoy blasting through the curves, but it's just too dangerous for the reasons listed above. Relax, cruise, take in the scenery. On the occasions when I've ridden the Drive during the week it's felt like I was the ONLY person on it. It's well work taking a day off of work. I had stopped once for gas in the 4 hours of rain and dried off a little bit but my leathers were very wet. Once I got to Morgantown, WV. I finally rode out of the rain and started to dry out. The rest of the ride there wasn't to bad, I hit a couple of very light rain but for the most part it was sunny and warm. The canoe trip was a blast. I didn't dump my canoe but of the 6 canoes in the trip 1 dumped twice and another dumped once. The weather was great, sunny and mid 90's. The trip home wasn't as wet as the trip there. I was dodging the storms from Morgantown all of the way home. I stopped once just east of Morgantown and waited about 10 minutes for a short lightning storm. I didn't hit any real rain again until I was on the Baltimore beltway, I just blew right through it. While I was gone my wife took the MSF course and PASSED, so she is a legal driver now. We went on our first ride on separate bikes yesterday. We just went through the neighborhood but she did great. She is a little scarred of the Sportster because "It has too much power".
