Join fellow riders on a small group tour of the Appalachians, hosted by yours truly. The tour I've put together features some of my favorite byways and blue highways. The route winds through the farmlands and forests of rural central Maryland, then explores the hills and hollows of West Virginia and the deep mountain recesses of western Virginia. The tour will take place on September 30, 1995. There are just seven slots to fill on this tour. The tour package price of $130 includes overnight accommodations for two at a country inn favored by local riders. One hundred percent of the proceeds (about $50 per couple) will benefit the Pediatric Brain Tumor Research Foundation, formerly known as the Honda Ride for Kids. If you've only toured Skyline Drive or the Blue Ridge Parkway, this is your opportunity to see the mountains of eastern Appalachia from a whole new perspective, meet a lot of new riding friends, and help fund the fight to defeat the number one killer of children under the age of twelve. If you would like more information and a registration form, contact me at dale@XXXXXX or call weekdays at 703.903.5527. I agree wholeheartedly on the weekdays issue, and would further suggest that November through February is great, even on weekends. I once rode all of 105 miles of Skyline from south to north on a mild (50s) January day and never once got behind another vehicle. Expectedly, though, I have a very different opinion about just 5mph over. I find I am usually comfortable cruising (not pushing) at about 15 over, or 50mph on Skyline and 60 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. I'd probably ride just a little faster than that if not for the rigid enforcement on those roads. I've encountered all of the stick-in-road, deer and moron-parked-in-middle-of-curve hazards, and never once found speed to be a problem. All of Skyline is doable at 50mph without braking or rolling off (kind of a fun way to try to ride it), though I do confess that just two or three turns are probably a little aggressive at that speed. If the park police get radar on you at that speed, though, you almost certainly will get a ticket. Ride every road you ever find with the name "Skyline". On my recent trip to Colorado I rode "Talimena Skyline Driva" across the Arkansas/Oklahoma border. It was a very pleasant surprise in an area where just a couple of months ago I would have guessed was all plains. I also wanted to do one in Colorado over Canon City, but our route didn't take us by there this time. One question: I've long wondered whether VA's radar ban is applicable in the federal lands of Skyline and the BRP. Anyone know for certain? I rode through last year, about this time on an early Monday morning. Gorgeous! Encountered only mild traffic (mostly Goldwing riders) later in the morning, and it wasn't bad at all. Just kept going on the Blue Ridge, and it was great! > Expectedly, though, I have a very different opinion about just 5mph > over. Started a little slower at first, then built up speed as I felt more comfortable. Scared myself silly in one really tight turn around a mountain when I went in too hot, then backed off afterwards. Good practice for motorcycle skills. For a New Yorker, they were some of the best curves I've experienced. Didn't see any park police, thankfully. I resisted the temptation to rev it on the straight sections, preferring to concentrate on smoothly sweeping the twisties as fast as I could. The Goldwing riders were also moving along as well, though. Even with the big bike, a passenger, and a trailer, those guys can swing through curves quite quickly. I trailed one skilled rider and partner for quite some time before I had enough courage to gun my little Seca II and pass them (with a big smile and wave from both our bikes). sam rhee From dc-cycles-request Mon Jul 10 16:07:33 1995 Date: Mon, 10 Jul 1995 16:07:33 -0500 (EST) From: Jon Ayscue Subject: For Sale - 1994 Honda Shadow VLX To: dc-cycles@XXXXXX X-VMS-To: STSCIC::IN%"dc-cycles@XXXXXX" MIME-version: 1.0 Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT I've decided (again) to sell my Honda Shadow VLX 600. In the warranty period I can only remember 1 problem. I was riding one day and my radio and all of the dash lights shut off... Well it turned out that the ignition switch was the problem. That happened last June. It has been exactly 1 year and 1 month and guess what.... Yesterday at 5:00 I went to the parking garage to get on the bike and leave work just like every other day. I turned on the ignition switch, everything looks ok. I hit the starter, ka-plunk! The lights went off and no electric! You know they don't run too well without electric. I played with the switch but all I could get was very weak power on the accesories part of the switch. After about 5 mins of swearing I went back to the dungeon where my office is and called my wife and my neighbor for help. The good news is that I have a trailer and the truck that I just bought to tow it was getting the tow package put on that day. The bad news is that my wife had not picked it up yet. So they went and picked it up (1 hour round trip), hooked up the trailer and came and got me. By 6:45 we had it loaded up and headed for home. While I was waiting I called some of the Harley dealers in the area. I found out that I wasn't the only one with a 94 Ultra have a problem with the ignition switch, 2 others down the same day. The switch will cost about $90. It will take them about 4 hours to do the job but most of them have at least a 3 week wait for a service apointment. Lets see at $50 per hour thats about $300 with tax for the job and it will be down for a month! More swearing.... When I got home I looked in the manual to see how difficult the job is. It will probably take me a couple of days to do the job, the entire front fairing has to come apart. It looks like it shouldn't be too difficult if the connectors are all labled (cruise control, radio, turn signals, PTT for the CB,...). The shop in Fredrick is going to check with the factory to see if they will cover the switch under waranty. If not I will do the work myself. Wish me luck... They don't have a new ignition switch so they had to order it. It will be in on the 19th. I told them that I would bring the bike in yesterday. Unfortunately it is a 1 hour drive from my house with no traffic so I left early yesterday to take it in. When I got home much to my surprise the truck was gone (my tow vehicle), wife too.... She finally shows up at 4:45 and says "I knew you were going to take it in but you have plenty of time." Durring rush hour Baltimore just like every other city has areas of the freeway system that clog up. To get to Fredrick I must go through one of the worst of these areas, it's always good for an extra 30 mins to an hour. Her note said she would be back at 4:00, if she had been I would have made it but.... Anyways I guess I will try again today. In the meantime I am back on the Sporty and boy is it fun! I have really missed the little guy. After riding the dresser for so long the Sporty is like a sport bike. Ok, sure it won't rev to 12K+ but it will go plenty fast and it is very fun in the twisties. Yay! 8^) Say, there are races this weekend at Summit Point. Anyone going? I'm working corners. That is if work doesn't keep me. Sigh. (Big deadlines-n-such.) I thought I'd tell everyone about Ventura Luggage System I just bought for my Katana 600. I ordered it on Wednesday, had it shipped next-day air, and received it Thursday. Just in time to mount it, pack it, and use it for my camping trip to the Delaware Water Gap this past weekend. (Good fun, BTW.) The system, which is available for a LOT (all?) sportbikes and some cruisers as well, bolted solidly onto my subframe at the points normally used by the old luggage hooks, which I removed. Some bikes require permanent removal of the passenger grab rail (a.k.a. the suicide bar). It's bike-specific. Basically it's two long L-shaped metal tubes, about 1" in diameter, which follow the side fairings from about the back of the rider's seat to just beyond the tail, where they bend sharply up, and stop. You then have the option of sliding either a "sport" or "pack" rack into the tube ends. Describing the rack is sort of difficult. Imagine an upside-down-U. The ends of the U go into the ends of the L tubes. Down toward the bottom of the U is welded your typical horizontal luggage rack. An added plus. You have a choice of bags. Either a 30 or 44 liter bag. I bought the 44 liter bag. Both bags slide down over the upside-down-U, where I found it's bloody unlikely to leave on its own. However, it comes with quick-release snaps which allow you to strap the bag to one of the horizontal beams of the luggage rack. You can buy two 44s, or two 30s, or a combination. They zip together if you buy two. The "pack rack" holds the bag. The "sport" rack is for when you don't want to carry the bag. The upside-down-U is very short, and doesn't look so funny naked on your bike. Both have the luggage rack, so you can strap on little things even with the sport rack. I bought only the pack rack and 44 liter bag. I think I might get the sport rack later, because the huge pack rack is a little silly looking without a bag covering it up. You can also buy straps to turn the bag into a back pack, as well as a rain cover for the bag. I absolutely love the thing. My friend bought one for his '94 F2, and he loves his as well. 44 liters is a helluva lot of space. I also have a set of stealth saddle bags, and an eclipse tank bag. All that, plus the luggage rack, and I was able to put an entire weekend's worth of camping gear onto the bike, and still have room to spare. Even my therm-a-rest mattress found a spot. I used to leave it behind for bike camping. No longer. They've received very favorable reviews in MCN, Cycle World, and Motorcyclist magazines. Copies of which the company shamelessly included in the box. 8^) What I bought (L brackets, pack rack, 44 liter bag) cost about $230. The company (HSI) can be reached at (800)-688-6439, and they're in Washington State. -- jimb@XXXXXX | http://www.basetech.com/jimb | jimb@XXXXXX ----------------------+--------------------------------+--------------------- 1993 GSX600F Katana - Capable of felony speeding to evade From dc-cycles-request Mon Jul 17 14:42:15 1995 Date: Mon, 17 Jul 1995 14:38:11 -0400 From: Dark Hacker To: B.Elwell@XXXXXX, CKarras@XXXXXX, CPMJ69A@XXXXXX, WeinsteJ@XXXXXX, chewy@XXXXXX, ckrieger@XXXXXX, cnorloff@XXXXXX, darden@XXXXXX, dbriggs@XXXXXX, dc-cycles@XXXXXX, jimb@XXXXXX Subject: Re: eat 'n ride Cc: jimb@XXXXXX From: jimb@XXXXXX (Jim Brooking) Subject: Re: eat 'n ride Say, there are races this weekend at Summit Point. I will be happy to send 'bio' info when I know where to send it. tom From dc-cycles-request Thu Jul 20 16:04:41 1995 Date: Thu, 20 Jul 1995 16:00:24 -0400 (EDT) From: Morris Berman X-Sender: morris@geni18 To: "Weinstein, John, Dr, NSS" Cc: Bill Elwell , Chia Hui Huang , CKarras , cliff krieger , chris norloff , CPMJ69A , Robert M Darden , "Daniel S. Subject: 29 july eat 'n ride Date: Fri, 21 Jul 95 13:23:00 EDT Encoding: 62 TEXT X-Mailer: Microsoft Mail V3.0 here we go again: another eat 'n ride. o when: 29 july o start time: 0830 o start point: silver diner, fairfax, va (directions below) o destination: boston's motorcycle cafe's m/c show and swap o route: rt 50 west to rt 15; rt 15 south to rt 17; rt 17 east through fredricksburg to port royal. boston's m/c cafe is at/near the intersection of rts 17 and 301. the distance from ffax to port royal is about 90 miles. other info: o the show/swap begins about 1130. the phone at the cafe is 804/742-5137. o i will be at the silver diner for breakfast at 0730. the management there usually sets aside an area for us and parking is plentiful. i hope you can join me for the eat part of the event. o my phone numbers at work/home (both 703 area codes) are 681-8687/273-5737. it's ok to call until midnight. o for riders coming from points west or via rt 15 in md, we will ride directly from the silver diner to gilbert's corner (rts 50 and 15 intersection) and pick up any riders who have assembled there. we will leave gilbert's corner at 0900. (as an aside, i should say that i'm not the most organized guy in the world so don't take these times too seriously. the idea is to have fun and be safe and not to adhere to a rigid schedule.) o directions to silver diner (intersection of west ox rd and fair lakes pkwy): from the beltway: take i-66 to exit for rt 50 west. after you exit the interstate, you'll go less than a mile on rt 50. take the SECOND west ox rd exit (SOUTH). go less than 1/2 mile (through about 5-7 lights) and the diner will be on ur left, right after fair oaks gables apartments. you'll have to make a left turn at the light to get into the parking lot as there's no entrance on west ox rd. o in the event of rain, who knows? i'll be chowing down at the diner in any event and we'll play it by ear. o like our last ride, there will be plenty of stops (about every 20-30 miles) and the pace will be leisurely. we'll travel in groups of 3-4 to avoid creating traffic hazards. o pse let me know if you think you'll be able to make it so i can tell the folks at silver diner how many to expect. requests: o a rider from north carolina will be in town and would like to come along as a back seater. anyone interested in giving her a ride? pse let me know. as an experienced m/cyclist, she knows how to be a passenger. o i am posting this msg to dc-cycles as well as a personal mail group. sorry if some of you get two cys. i don't know how much overlap exists between dc- and balt-cycles. if someone thinks it would be worthwhile to post this to balt, pse do so. in any event, pse, no flames. the pay's not worth it. a final note: o i do not expect all of our future rides to be in va. if you md riders have some good routes in mind and anyone would like to set up a ride for august, pse let me know. tnx for your patience. i look forward to seeing you next weekend. john <> '81 cb 750k DoD #1645 From dc-cycles-request Sun Jul 23 12:58:43 1995 Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Date: Sat, 22 Jul 1995 12:57:30 -0500 To: dc-cycles@XXXXXX From: hacker@XXXXXX (Dark Hacker) Subject: Re: 29 july eat 'n ride >here we go again: another eat 'n ride. > > o when: 29 july > o start time: 0830 > o start point: silver diner, fairfax, va (directions below) > o destination: boston's motorcycle cafe's m/c show and swap > o route: rt 50 west to rt 15; rt 15 south to rt 17; rt 17 east I was at Summit Point this weekend for the MARRC races and had a great time. Although I took the cage, I noted that this is a REALLY NICE ride if you take Rt 9 into Charlestown and then onto 340. Rt 9 is very twisty in places but very scenic. Along the way you can pull over on the shoulder that overlooks what I would guess was the Cumberland Gap and the Shenandoah (?). The view at 3:00-4:00 in the afternoon is breathtaking. The light reflecting off the water and the fluffy clouds becomes all silvery, particulry when it's humid. As I passed by, there was one biker stopped at the overlook, apparently in rapturous contemplation. I was tempted to stop myself, but I was going in the opposite direction and even a small car is difficult to maneuver on this road. A future Eat N' Ride might include an afternoon at Summit point. Lots of good biking out there and the motorcycle races are great fun to watch. - Hacker =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= - Hacker "Life itself is... COMPUTATION!" To: dc-cycles@XXXXXX MIME-version: 1.0 X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4 PL24] Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit Content-length: 1890 Hi folks! I just wanted to say what a pleasure it was to meet all those who met today. I just thought some of you might be interested in what happened to me today. For those of you who weren't at the ride-it was nice once we got rid of the jackets(I like VWs all of a sudden)- I hit an uneven joint in the road(repaving road)and bent my wheel. Well, on the way back I found that something was also wrong with my forks! I was meeting resistance when traveling about 1/2 down the tube. Above and below were smooth(I think this implies a bent tube?). In any case, I finished the ride and left Boston Cafe w/ some of the guys(nice). Hey did the VF750C win anything? On the way home, they went up route 5 and I headed home to baltimore. Well, wouldn't you know... it started to rain. 10 minutes later(I'm drenched in soggy leathers at this point) a cager decides he likes my lane (2 lane road) because it isn't flooding! yup, smack! luckily I'm uninjured...as for the duck, he hit my rear wheel(I managed to keep the bike up). So now here I am in the rain with TWO bent wheels AND possibly a bent fork. Needless to say it took me a while to get home.(just now got in- this is my venting stage). At least I gave as good as I got- but my foot hurts now. Well, that was my day... how was yours :) PS: John, I may not be up and riding for a while( Cagiva NA says parts will take about 3 months). Is there no end to this freakish luck I'm having? All in all, it was still a great ride and I really enjoyed meeting everyone. I just hope I get to do it again before the season's over! Maybe next time, I'll run interference in my cage IF my duck is still lame(leathers?). PPS: I hope everyone else got home without any incidents.
