The carpenter bee at 70 on Saturday was an experience though ;-) The mark is just fading away. Many years ago ('81 or so) I was coming home from Alexandria and took the GW parkway. I walked into the 7/11 at the end and saw the face full of black flys except around the glasses :-) Nothing has beat the June bug though. [Dave] Which is like saying, while on a safari to Africa..."while in the bush, we encountered several friendly Lions".... ;-) Twice while cruising down backroads, cages gave way when I came up on them fast (but not crowding or tailgating them). They'd find a place to slide over to the shoulder and wave me on. I'd give 'em a wave back after I was safely in front :-) Anyway, it was a nice change to be able to make it around on my favorite back roads without having some doofus in a car wanting to do the speed limit ;-) [Dave] I'll bet... That's rare indeed around here... It happens, but it's rare... Hell, the guys in the retirement home near my house have a network of seniors that are waiting to pull out in front of me. They're well equipped - walkie talkies, cell phones, '74 Buick station wagons with CB's - they're ready... You've got to get up pretty early to beat them too... they even have a mini bus on the weekends that follows the wife to various stores... While the wife is busy finding a spot to park, they parade into the store to buy one item, paid for with an out of state check... ;-) Since I race my car and need a new SA helmet I was considering buying a black one so that it could share duty between my car and motorcycle. Does anyone else use an SA helmet for street riding? Is there any reason not to do this? The only difference I know of is that the SA helmets I'm looking at have Nomex liners. [Dave] I've never been turned from a track day using my M/C (shoei rf800) Helmet, so have always used that. Seems to me you could just get a pullover nomex liner... [Dave] Not that I'm aware, but, the whole family of '84 - '02 zx900A&B, 1kR, zx10, 11 & zzr12 + the ZRX 11 & 12 are prone to lunching the number 3 & 4 rod bearings / journals. They're both fed oil off the same oil source internally. It typically happens on drag bikes or oft wheelied bikes. Several companies; Muzzys, Westech, Mr. Turbo, SuperbikeMike; make bypass kits that route additional oil from the other side of the motor to the 3&4 journal area to help alleviate the problem. I have one on my bike. They help, but don't eliminate the problem. You would not necessarily hear 'death knock' or 'rod knock' pre failure, and this is exacerbated by the 11 being a noisy motor to begin with. Have him check the oil for excessive bearing material... anyway, HTH Dave -- Sponsored by: Want to play blackjack online? How about a good game of poker? Want to place a bet on the big game? I had to get out the door in 10 minutes in order to meet Steve, Kevin and the other Dan in time. We met up at Sheetz where we left to hit 211. Somewhere on 211 I managed to lose my brand new digital camera. I had forgotten to zip up my pocket in the rush that I was in. We spent about 30 minutes looking for it on the roadside, no luck. Luckily my credit card covers theft/loss for the first 90 days. Then kevin loses his owners manual, we end up turning around to get that. Somwhere I hit a patch of gravel and do a nifty fishtail through a turn. Other than that the ride was great until we got lost somewhere in West VA on CR-13. CR-13 (it might have been CR-13-1 by then, is a one lane road covered in gravel. We were going nice and slow taking our time. I went over a slight hill, at the end of a turn, hit a rather large stick that I didn't notice because I was paying attention to the gravel (now paranoid of the stuff) further ahead. The stick managed to get the bike quite unsettled and pointed in the wrong direction, heading right for a ditch. Looking back I may have been able to REALLY lean the bike over and make it through the turn, but I was pointed right into the ditch and intincts were to scrub off ALL speed. I hit the brakes hard, locked them up and went into the ditch. Damage to the bike was minimal, some scrapes and wind screen had popped out. A few zip ties later (and some blood, I cut myself with the knife) and all was well. We were back on the road, still lost, but everything was ok. We decided it was a good time to stop for the night. Well it turns out there is a blues festival in Summerville, so there were no rooms, even at the dumpiest motel. So we ended up heading for Sutton after getting a reservation there. The next morning, it was little chilly but it looked like a good day to ride. I was a little gun shy after yesterday's incident. So I take it nice and easy. We hit some really great roads. Then I get stung on the neck by a bee just riding down the road. Then Kevin almost runs out of gas and we stop to fuel up. After fueling up we start climbing into another mountain. I start feeling really good again, start pushing it a little more into the turns, everything is going great. My confidence is back up, I'm having a blast. So I go into a pretty tight corner, slightly tighter than I expected, so I end up using every last bit of the road. Well almost into the end of the turn, the road got narrower. It used to be there at one time, but apparetly is just worn/washed away. I hit dirt. Bike low sides, we both fly through some gravel, then fall off a 50 or so foot drop of the side of the hill. The bike makes it down quite a ways, I end up sliding half way down. I try to walk up the hill to let everyone know I'm fine. This isn't quite so easy though, the hill is so steep and muddy, getting up is a PITA. After convincing everyone I was fine(it wasn't easy this time), we try to get someone to pull the bike up (its apparent I won't be riding it home). My cell phone is dead b/c its been in analog mode, Steve's has no service and Kevin's can barely get a signal. Kevin finally gets through. About 1/2 an hour later a State trooper makes his way up. We wait another 30 for the tow trucks. The trooper writes up the report, bike gets pulled out. Its a total mess. I get the info from the wrecking place and we're back on the road, minus one YZF-600R. I'm just fine, have a few scrapes, can't even see them from more than a foot away. My arms are pretty sore from hanging on to the back of Steve's VFR for a couple of hundred miles. I'm thankfull and lucky that I walked away with nothing more that a few scratches and a bruised ego. The JR Phoenix pants, gloves and jacket held up fine. Next long road trip I take, you guy's will see me a mile away with rabbit's feet, horseshoes, four leaf clovers and what ever other lucky charms glued to my bike. I rode on and around 211 with Collin and the old DC-Cycles crew quite a bit. This is no place to learn!!.  Dan you need to take it easy and get to the point you do not need to think about how to react in a bad situation, instincts and experience are a big part. Always wear full leathers and be ready to ride hard when you go to 211. As my wife says if you get two guys together with 2 pogo sticks they will end up racing!.  Get yourself a dirt bike and ride , wheelie, and wreck until it is second nature. It might save your life. Oh yeah it was quite a site watching Collin get on a clapped out Yamaha Maxim and dusting everyone. It was also cool to watch him wheelie up and down 211 on my TL1000s.

Ride safe and God bless.

True. Former Gov Jimbo Bubba Gilmore's ill-planned car tax rebate coupled with a decline in the economy and financial hi-jinks perpetrated by the VDOT has pushed the Commonwealth of Virginia into near bankruptcy. Of course the taxpayers liked the reduction in car tax, but the state then cut back on money sent to the counties for education and fire/police services and road improvements as well, pushing the counties into the red. Next up for revenue, house tax. In the last two years my 6 month house tax bill has rocketed up from $1100 and change to near $1500, roughly what I *saved* on car tax. You're right, there was no repeal because the Governer doesn't have the constitutional power to repeal a county tax. Gilmore ran on a lie, and the masses of ignorants who had no clue what the VA constitution said voted for him. And you're right about fat. As I stated in another post, Allen and Gilmore fluffed the VA government up about 70%, contrary to thier position of less government. Seeing into the future had little to do with it. Gilmore proved his lack of basic arithmetic skills when his estimate of the cost to the state was less than half the projected cost. And let's not forget his despeirate attempt to go for the 70% rebate. One of his plans to artificially inflted the buget was to rape federal medicaid funds. Not a new idea, about a dozen states take advantage of that loophole. And he instructed the tax department to withold refunds to inflate the cash on hand, ignoring the accounts payable deficit in the reporting of revenue available. NC does, and while my boat was in Camden County I paid property tax on it. And you overlook *other* taxes. VA's state income tax s very low. Ciggie tax is the lowest in the nation, at 2.5 cents a pack. New York has State Regeants exams, talk about shit outta luck. You flunk the exam, you take the course over. Back in the 50s when I was trembling in fear with a death grip on the #2 pencil, there was one test for all. Now Dr Feel Good rules, and NY has three test levels, college bound, burger flipper, and mouth breather. Moto content! Years ago, after EMT reports of road rash, NY actually considered legislating complete coverage riding gear AKA leathers. NY has a tendancy to be a nanny state. HINT: want good contact cement? Buy a bottle that says it's banned in NYC by the fire department! Grabs like all get-out! Admittedly, I bought them because MCN did their 'glove test' and the Z customs got a favorable review (#2 overall), and they were only 80 smackers. I can't personally vouch for their abrasion resistance, wear on asphalt, impact resistance / absorption, and quite frankly, I hope I never can. They are comfortable, allegedly tough, durable (as far as that can be taken, given I haven't "tested" them), and I'll buy another pair, should I need. They have more frills available now, like carbon etc... I just got basic black like the ones in the test... So I lose 5 Poseur points... HTH Dave -- Sponsored by: Want to play blackjack online?
