It is unofficialy recommended to use petroleum based oil for thwe first 3,000 miles to let the parts wear out to their best fit (break in period) and then switch to syntetic to decrease normal wear ever after. Mileage for bikes is nothing though. Time is more important unless you use it on a daily basis 365 days a year. If a needle valve stays (sticks) open during the winter and gas overflows into the cylinders, it will eventually end up in your crankcase and destroy your bearings. So when in doubt change the oil and filter, clean the carbs and then "turn" the engine to start. There are very few synthetics that are are not mixable, and fewer as days go by. Check an article that I have on my web for further info on synthetics. http://umbc9.umbc.edu/~kosmas/synoil.html > -patrick Kosmas From balt-cycles-request@XXXXXX Thu Apr 6 03:14:51 1995 Subject: Re: Synthetic Oil in Patrick's Suzuki To: payter@XXXXXX (Payter Versteegen) Date: Thu, 6 Apr 95 3:14:51 EDT Cc: dc-cycles@XXXXXX, balt-cycles@XXXXXX In-Reply-To: <9504052045.AA04436@niccolo.gsfc.nasa.gov>; from "Payter Versteegen" at Apr 5, 95 4:45 pm From: kosmas@XXXXXX (Kosmas) X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.3 PL11] Payter Versteegen > There's usually quite a bit of conversation on the validity of > synthetic motor oil. Synthetics will run through gaskets (case gaskets) if those were desifned for an older pre-synthetic era bike. It may not always happen but it does all too often to seventies machines, when they were other wise sealed up. Which is an other good reason not to use 10w-40 on 2stroke trannies, as the manufacturer suggests but a thicker gear oil. If you have clutch sleepage to the point that you can't stand it, on the street go to a dry clutch, on dirt try stiffer springs and heftier plates. Because of time constraints on when I had to start my new job, I had to fly out to DC instead of driving out. My truck is still back in New Mexico, and will be for at least another month. I'm renting a car right now, but that adds up to some serious bucks in a hurry, so I want to loose the rental as soon as I can. I'd been planning on buying another motorcycle in the nearish future, and it looks like the right time to do so is *now*. I'm enough out of practice that tackling these freeways does not fill me with joy, but I think it'll be OK. I'll get my butt in for an MSF refresher, pronto. Anyway, I do not know the area motorcycle resources at all, and I'm starting out from zero as far as riding gear is concerned. I'd appreciate any and all comments on the following questions. I don't know the weather and what'll work well here. It sounds like I'll swelter to death during the summer in a full leather jacket without ventillation zips. How about with zips? Can I get away with a single jacket for as near to year round riding as the area allows? What would *you* get if you wanted to spend maybe $300-$500 on a decent jacket? That won't cover a full aerostitch, but I should be able to come up with something pretty reasonable for that. Any recommendations on lightweight raingear that'd go over it? How about about leathers for tall guys? At 6'5" and medium to long in the torso, I can't put on just any jacket off the rack. I need recommendations on dealers that won't scalp an area newbie too badly and sell me something I don't need. How about helmets? I won't pull the scummy trick of trying on everything in a dealership and then buying mailorder, but I don't particularly want to end up at the most expensive dealership, either. Any recommendations about decent insurance carriers? I've got a reasonable handle on the sort of bike I want. 550-750ish, standard, probably mid 80's, shafty and windshield if I can get it. It'll be used, but I've been pouring over the want ads, and there are a reaonable number of bikes that fit my needs within my price range. (I'll cheerfully spend up to $2K. Less cheerfully up to $3K.) I can't wrench worth a damn, and I'm a little afraid of getting a bike with a serious mechanical problem, but in my price range I can afford to get something in pretty good condition. I don't think that'll be too much of a problem. I can probably sort something out there myself, but I'll buy anyone dinner who wants to come with me to look at bikes and offer an opinion on mechanical condition and general suitability. The same to anyone who would let me borrow a 'beater' bike in a parking lot for 30 minutes. I haven't been riding in about two years, though I still have a valid NM motorcycle license. It won't take that long to get smooth again, but it'll be embarrasing to miss a shift while test riding! (On the subject of wrenching, free unskilled manual labor provided to any mechanically minded bike-type who likes to teach while sie works.) I've got a line on an '84 Nighthawk 700 that looks pretty interesting. It's not a young bike, with nearly 22,000 miles on it, but the owner claims it's about as pristine as a bike that old can be. Garge kept, never down, very mechanically sound. He wants $2K for it. That strikes me as maybe just a touch pricey for that many miles, but if it's in as good a condition as he says, maybe it's a reasonable price. Any opinions? Anything in particular I should be looking for? I'm open to other suggestions. There is a pretty significant time factor in all of this. I'd love to get it all pulled together by Friday, but I doubt that's going to happen. Among other things, the Penny Saver or whatever it's called comes out then, and that'll be a good source of ads. Maybe I can shop over the weekend, (and make Balticon as best I can), and close on Monday. We'll see, and any help in this project is greatly appreciated! I did beat on it pretty hard, but I also was a mechanic at a Honda dealer at the time, so I knew how to fix it. Basically the whole problem stems from the fact that the engine was originally designed as a chain drive. (CBX750, Euro / Japanise domestic market) When they adapted it shaft drive, they made clearance for the 90 degree power change by making the bearings narrower on the secondary and primary shafts. Less support = more failure. Second gear is the one that starts to go first. They also have a thermal problem with the spark box that is fixed by placing it away from the engine. E-mail me if you want more info. I do side work if you get a beater and need work done on it. A local Cycle Gear tells me that only the 6017 is being recalled, not the 6010A and 6016 - the claim is that only the 6017 was made in Korea. I don't have a lot of faith in those guys though... It sounds like I'll >swelter to death during the summer in a full leather jacket without >ventillation zips. Yes, you will. How about with zips? I think that depends on what part of NM you're used to riding in. If you stay up in the mountains, you'll probably find DC very hot & humid by comparison. If you could wear a leather jacket with zips in the NM dessert, then you'll probably be O.K. here. But DC will be *MUCH* more humid than what you're used to. You'll probably also spend more time sitting in slow moving traffic than you are used to. Personally, I can't wear my leather jacket here during the summer heat (but mine isn't vented, either). I usually wear a fairly heavy denim in the summer--not as much protection, I know, but life is full of compromises. >Can I get away with a single jacket for as near to year round riding as >the area allows? I think this depends on what you consider "year around." Most people around here probably pack up the bikes by mid October. If you have a jacket with zips, and get it large enough to put some kind of liner under it (or buy one with a removable liner), then yes, you can probably make it through the fall with that. I few hardy souls ride almost year 'round, and I'd recommend heated clothing (vest/gloves) in addition to your leather for that. >What would *you* get if you wanted to spend maybe $300-$500 on a decent >jacket? That won't cover a full aerostitch, but I should be able to come >up with something pretty reasonable for that. I wear a Vanson jacket, and find it both fits me better, and is more supple, than anything else I've tried. I'm not sure who locally sells them anymore, though, since mine is many years old. >Any recommendations on lightweight raingear that'd go over it? How about >about leathers for tall guys? At 6'5" and medium to long in the torso, I >can't put on just any jacket off the rack. Again, my rainsuit is so old that I don't even think it's made anymore. Dry Riders seem pretty popular, but I have no personal experience with one. >I need recommendations on dealers that won't scalp an area newbie too >badly and sell me something I don't need. Bob's BMW has a good reputation, although they are certainly not the cheapest source for anything. If you go there, ask for Gary Yee, and tell him Bob Meyer sent you (it won't get you a cheaper price, but it may get you better service). They are also very willing to order special sizes, etc. Cycles USA has a terrible rep, although I've been treated reasonably well there. They used to jack up their parts prices heavily, however. Don't know if they still do. Coleman Power Sports probably has the best selection of accessories (especially clothing). Their reputation is probably mid-range, unless you're a racer, then the guys behind the counter will take more interest in helping you, and maybe find a way to cut you a deal. Cycle Sport gets most of my parts business these days (although that hasn't been much business lately, I'll admit). They seem reasonable on prices and service. Not the biggest selection of merchandise, however. Art Crow, proprietor of Riders Accessory Warehouse (RAW), gets most of my accessory business. He is the owner and sole employee, so he has to care about keeping his customers satisfied. His prices are fair, he'll special order stuff, and he does tire installation as well. He stocks a pretty wide selection of jackets, too. >How about helmets? I won't pull the scummy trick of trying on everything >in a dealership and then buying mailorder, but I don't particularly want >to end up at the most expensive dealership, either. I'd compare prices at several of the places I mentioned above. Any recommendations >about decent insurance carriers? This could generate a real controversy. I personally am insured by GEICO, because they've given me the best rates always, since I was insured under by parents policy (many, many, many years ago ). However, GEICO has a nasty reputation for dropping policy holders who have accidents, won't cover you if you admit to using a radar detectors, and have a generally lousy PR reputation. I've heard at least one person claim good rates from Allstate. The best bet is probably to shop around by calling a number of agents. >I've got a reasonable handle on the sort of bike I want. 550-750ish, >standard, probably mid 80's, shafty and windshield if I can get it. Well, I'll accept your offer of dinner, but I'm honestly not your best choice for this. I can wrench moderately well, but I'm not sure I know enough about it to really evaluate a bike for someone else. You might check with a couple of dealers--they might agree to inspect a bike you were considering buying for a nominal fee (if you can get the seller to agree to take it there). >The same to anyone who would let me borrow a 'beater' bike in a parking >lot for 30 minutes. I'd suggest contacting the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. They teach courses on weekends all spring & summer long. I know they have them at NOVA community college in Loudon county, and probably at other locations in the area. The courses are pretty cheap, and they provide the bikes. And it could just save your life someday. I can't find their number handy, but I'll try to remember to look it up and send it too you. Maybe someone else reading this knows. >I've got a line on an '84 Nighthawk 700 that looks pretty interesting. >It's not a young bike, with nearly 22,000 miles on it, but the owner claims >it's about as pristine as a bike that old can be. Admittedly, I have had some trouble with GEICO (they wouldn't insure me on a GS550E when I was 20, classifying THAT BIKE as a sportbike!). But, even with some (auto) moving violations and even a small accident, now, age 23, they insure me very reasonably on my 750 Magna (~$400/year, comprehensive). My turn now? You are a devil...ehhhrr...Gov.Employee G.E.Insurance Co. covers you better than me, I think. I was 28, with out a spec on my records, had Geico on my car for 2 years before and tried them. They said no! They send me to their agent who sold Progressive for them?? They suck in terms of prices. That's where the last bozo who almost lost his license had to go, not me! Would you like to know more about Geico? For the past 3-4 years now, when I go away I let somebody pick up my mail and pay my bills. The first time I complained since my friend only paid my bills that came to me. They cancelled my insurance for that. Then I called, paid, got reinstated, and ask them to mail me all correspondence to my friend's address. Guess what? I had to go away for 2-3 months and I came back and was told that I wasn't sent any bills. The bill went to the old address together with a cancellation notice. Yes they may be cheap, BUT! You may get 1,000 of insurance violation bills from the state, or you may destroy a Benz 560 and pay out of your pocket due to their miserable book keeping. Now I am going to have my calendar set at Geico's deadlines since I don't expect to get a policy or bill from them. After sending them some friends for customers, I'm going to call them back and tell them my experiences, and see what they say. > -Sash > > > Michael "Sash" Dow > National Institutes of Health > National Institute of Mental Health Kosmas From dc-cycles-request Thu Apr 27 00:18:35 1995 Date: Thu, 27 Apr 1995 00:18:35 -0400 (EDT) From: "Midn J.E.
